My Thoughts

From,”The Vertical Self”

Our greatest scorn is reserved for those who fail at the game of looking good. this is why we have become so obsessed with hypocrisy. We experience a guilty pleasure when others are “found out”.

……Their charades just prove to us that no one is really good; therefore, we all must just put on an act that says we are

……The measuring stick for our success in this quest becomes our personal feelings. Do we feel great? Do we feel free? Do we feel happy?”

How often do we based things, anything, even just going to church on how it makes us FEEL? Maybe we feel that by following a certain pattern that is on display for others, that will complete our lives?

In, “The Vertical Self”, I found it to be a very challenging read, because it challenges us to go beyond caring, even as followers, what the world and sometimes, just our fellow believers, think, but focus on the person that matters most, our Heavenly Father and instead of looking side by side (hence the Horizontal Self), we start looking upward, towards our Father, more in our lives.

Convicting, challenging and encouraging (yes, Christian keywords), “The Vertical Self” was interesting to read, because, it’s not a self-help book, it’s not a “do this and you’ll be doing great in your Christian walk” but it takes a step out of everything, and challenges the believer, to really pursue a radical and transparent faith and walk with our Heavenly Father.

Filled with references to modern culture and with biblical references, Mark Sayers, really goes in depth with “The Vertical Self”, so be prepared for a book that isn’t a quick through read, but instead, you will find yourself with a pencil, plenty of corners turned down to re-read and times, where you may find yourself on a stop-think-read-re read and challenge your personal thoughts and convictions about your own walk.

Publisher’s Description
It’s time for a return to Radical Holiness.

Welcome to the 21st century where you can now purchase and exchange personalities, depending on mood and circumstance; where you are told that you can be anyone you want to be, and identity is no longer based in a sense of self but rather in the imagery you choose at that moment.

The Bible contains a radically different way of understanding our identity. The path that God has chosen for us to discover who we really are is the path of holiness.

The most exciting thing is that this path is not for otherworldy saints, rather it is a path of earthy, gutsy holiness. It’s a path that is not about basing your life on this world or of shunning your desires. Instead, it is about bringing your hopes, your dreams, your brokenness, your desires, your humanness under the Lordship of Christ. By doing this we don’t just discover a new way of living out our faith, we discover a liberating, revolutionary, life-embracing way of being truly human.

Nelson's Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts Book Review

Nelson's Complete Book of BIble Maps and Charts, 3rd EditionAuthor:            Thomas Nelson
Published:     January 19th 2010 by Thomas Nelson
Details:            Paperback, 512 pages
ISBN:                 1418541710

My Thoughts

Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts<, 3rd Edition by Thomas Nelson, is a great addition for the serious student of the bible, small bible groups, homeschooler, or just for the “regular” reader of Scripture and I think a, hands down, must get.
Broken down into the Old Testament and New Testament, and then by books of the bible,Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts, 3rd Edition  provides more than just maps and charts, but also great insights into the author of the book, time period (date) that is covered, themes and literay structure,at a glance, outline, a quick synopsis of the local culture and practices, and pertinent information relating to the book (i.e. breakdown of the ten plagues).
Perusing Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts<, 3rd Edition, the book is a wealth of information and yet just 512 pages thick (not really as thick as one may think and easy to carry).
There is both an alphabetical and biblical index in the back and I was truly astonished and happy that Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts, 3rd Edition is all that it says it is and more.
This is something that would be a handy resource, with easy to find information and charts for quick look up if you have a daily bible reading plan, need to look up information for bible study or just interested in the relevance of each book of the Bible.

Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts, 3rd Edition  lives up to providing a new way into looking at the Bible and our Father’s message and not only makes the Bible become more alive but there is a true bonus that in addition to what the book has to offer, additional maps and charts that are provided as a free download.
This is an indispensable resource guide that I highly recommend anyone who is either curious or serious about reading His word, and helps provide the reader with additional material that brings the Biblical world alive.

For homeschoolers, this is an added treat to use in addition to your current biblical studies with your children, and a great way to introduce children to the Biblical background of the Bible.

Between the maps, the charts and the tables and the additional information,Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts<, 3rd Edition guarenteers to bring the Bible alive and provide the reader with an excellent and in depth visual overview of the Bible.

I have to throw in that the price can’t be beat either. Not only is it affordable but the addition of the free maps and charts that can be download really makes this an excellent resource to have on hand.

DVD Description

Featuring Tim Conway as Hermie and special guest-star Fred Willard (“Wall-E”, “Kim Possible”, “Chicken Little”, etc) and includes the original song “How Could Anyone Not Love Me” and the cartoon short “Caterpilla” (a spoof of Cinderella). Lesson is based on Luke 10:27 “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” (ICB)

My Review

“”Antonio Meets His Match: Its About Being a Good Neighbor”  is a very cute video and it had not only the kids giggling throughout it, but even myself as we watched this video together.

With an emphasis on, Luke 10:27, this cute animated movie helps children learn about the importance of loving our neighbors and not just the people we live next door, but anyone and for adults, this is a timely lesson, since there are times when we have people in our lives that we feel are unloveable or are like sandpaper, but our Heavenly Father can love us for our own faults, so we should strive, to learn to love and yes, work somehow, even the unloveable or as Antonio felt about Angus, the annoying in our eyes, while following  what can feel like a hard command by our Heavenly Father.

What was a pleasant surprise was the “Why” questions that the kids asked throughout the DVD, “”Antonio Meets His Match: Its About Being a Good Neighbor”  and it was encouraging how this is a great way to discuss ‘life lessons’ with the children about being a follower of Christ and bearing good testimony to our Father.

If you are looking for a not so sugary sweet DVD but also one that captures what our Heavenly Father encourages each of us to mature as Christians and strive to follow, I highly suggest, “”Antonio Meets His Match: Its About Being a Good Neighbor”.

This is perfect for Sunday School teachers, to watch with kids as a family and just when you have moments when similiar situations may arise and you and your child can watch together to get an idea of how to handle certain social situations.

How to Reach Your Full Potential for God-Book Review

How to Reach Your Full Potential for God

 Author: Dr. Charles Stanley

  • Author: Dr. Charles Stanley
  • Hardcover: 256 pages
  • Publisher: Thomas Nelson (December 29, 2009)
  • ISBN-10: 140020092X
  • Reading,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, I was impressed by the scriptural backing of the book.

Covering seven principles that often reflect the daily concerns that as Christians, people find themselves struggling or looking how to deal with, Dr. Charles Stanley, provides biblical backed solutions and examples from the Bible of how to seek God’s Word, to reach, our individual potential, to serve and worship our Heavenly Father at our best.

What ,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, doesn’t do, is be an everyday self help book, but instead emphasize how our Heavenly Father can help you.

Backing suggestions with scripture, ,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, indeeds reaching it’s full potential, and is a wonderful suggestion for those who are seeking to develop a deeper and more active relationship with our Heavenly Father and a book, that could easily be recommend, not as “the source”, but as a tool for helping new to “young” Christians seeking to have a more substantial relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Dr. Stanley, constantly reemphasizes that,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, does not take the place of the ultimate source of guidance, the Bible, but does help provide useful references that anyone could find value in.

On page 16, Dr. Stanley shares, “The Christian life was never intended to be a matter of book learning or hard knowledge. God wants us to live out the life He created and intends for us to live”.

There are some parts of the book that are encouraging and others that for some, may feel convicting due to its bluntness and telling the reader what they need to hear, not what they want to hear, and it lives up to what Dr. Stanley says that,”Anytime we turn fromthe Fatehr’s way to our way, we grieve Him. Anytime we choose what we want over what God wants for us, we stifle the Holy Spirit’s ability to help us” (pg.38)

However the truth is, reading this book, there was so many quotable quotes, examples and scripture that could be shared that it really helps open doors that God seeks to open.

If you are truly inspired to live a more fruitful and deeper relationship with our Heavenly Father, I recommend,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,.

No one is perfect, but no one is so imperfect that they don’t have the potential to be used for and in a way that will glorify our Heavenly Father.

“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, is a great reminder that it’s not about changing or altering who God has made us to be, but about a relationship that aims at maturing and making us better who we are and that is a good thing.

“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, is just an overall encouraging book for either general reading, or discovering how to take your relationship with our Heavenly Father to another level and a recommend read to all.
