This Week’s “In Other Words”
“ We will not hide these truths from our children
but will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord.
We will tell of His power and the mighty miracles He did.
So each generation can set its hope anew on God,
remembering His glorious miracles and obeying His commands.”~ Psalm 78:4,7 NLB

Karen of, In Love W.I.T.H. Jesus, shares this week, a passage from, Psalm 78:4,7 NLB.
Matthew Henry Commentary (pretty handy to have for insights and another look at things) shared the following:
Attention called for.
These are called dark and deep sayings, because they are carefully to be looked into.
The law of God was given with a particular charge to teach it diligently to their children, that the church may abide for ever. Also, that the providences of God, both in mercy and in judgment, might encourage them to conform to the will of God.
The works of God much strengthen our resolution to keep his commandments.
Hypocrisy is the high road to apostacy; those that do not set their hearts right, will not be stedfast with God….But young persons, though they are bound to submit in all things lawful, must not obey sinful orders, or copy sinful examples. (Ps 78:9-39)
For those who have come to call Jesus Christ, as their Lord and Saviour, and follow and read and study His word, what God has shared, those words are as 2 Timothy 3:10-17 (NKJV)
10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:10-17, New King James Version)
Notice….2 Timothy 3:10-17 (NKJV) says, carefully.
The bible is true today, as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow.
It takes faith….to believe in that….the same faith that many are willing to stand up, defend it and hold to it, despite the costs.
Yet…there is a charge for parents to pass this down, but with care and discretion and study and reading and more care and prayer and discretion.
In the sermon,”God’s Word is a Seed“, several points are made about His Word; One of which is that His word, is like a seed that is carefully sown and nurtured (taking the time to read and study-both two different concepts, just because one has read something doesn’t mean the same as studying).
As the sermon shares,”Most people expect God’s Word to work like a stick of dynamite — but God’s Word is like a seed. We know because of what Jesus said:
LUKE 8:11 NKJ
11 “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
The Holy Spirit, through Peter, also said God’s Word is a seed.”
Like crops for the future, parents are called to pass on and to teach His word to future generations…..a spiritual legacy that is pass forward, but this is not just something that is seen overnight….when you plant a seed….what is there, is the faith that the seed is alive and from there, a plant….like a seed that has been planted in the earth to grow, it takes faith and care and nuturing, to see it through.
And no one really sees a seed sprout overnight into a full grown plant!
God’s Word is a Seed really does a wonderful job comparing how faith in God is like a seed, such as:
1. A seed does nothing until planted.
2.A seed takes time to produce.
No one expects a seed to produce a harvest the same day that seed is planted.
Sometimes the Word of God seems to spring up and bear fruit immediately. Yet, if we knew the details, we would understand that the fruit of the Word grew in that person’s life over time
Children can see for themselves, a parent’s walk with Christ; They can see the hypocrisy or the true fellowship and judge for themselves.
There is an important legacy of growing and walking as a Christian to be shared with our children….it is a legacy that we have to ask ourselves….what are they seeing in our walk and what we share with them.
As Deuteronomy 6:19 encourages famillies:
1 “Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the LORD your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, 2 that you may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. 3 Therefore hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the LORD God of your fathers has promised you—‘a land flowing with milk and honey.’
4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:1-9, New King James Version)
