Start Your Day Off Right By Dionna Sanchez

Start Your Day Off Right
By Dionna Sanchez

Some days it seems like the moment our feet hit the floor and we get out of bed, things go wrong.

The day doesn’t get off on the right foot and everything dominoes from that point on into chaos, stress, anger, and many other emotions.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

I have found that my days start off so much better when I give my day to the Lord.

God doesn’t want to only be consulted when my day goes wrong He wants to be IN CHARGE of my day!

The funny thing is, that when I can give Him my day, I am actually more organized, and feel more in control of what goes on; whether it’s last-minute things with my girls or plans that get changed or delayed.

I am calmer and in a frame of mind that is more in-line with the kind of person I want to be.

All it takes is an intentional few minutes. You don’t have to set aside your whole morning agenda.

For God understands that our lives are full. He just wants to be with us in the fullness of them!

Give your day to the Lord by praying to Him as you lay in bed waking up, as you get ready in the bathroom, or even as you eat breakfast.

Recite a Bible verse that praises the Lord for His goodness and his Sovereignty, or a verse that talks about submitting your pride to Him and allowing Him to guide your steps.

Listen to a Christian speaker as you get dressed and ready or put on some Christian music that gets you praising God.

All of these things can be done while you prepare for your day.

All of them help take our thoughts and place them where they need to be on the Lord, instead of on other problems or issues.

And they help us filter where our priorities and energies need to go instead of scrambling so hard to meet expectations or demands that could be dropped because they simply clog up our lives.

I know when I start my day off right in any or all of these ways, I feel so humbled to have God on my side helping me handle whatever comes my way.

If you want to change the atmosphere of your morning, and your whole day simply start your day off right by going to the Lord and giving it to Him first.

[Book Review] Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides

Turning Guilt Trips into Joy RidesTurning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides by Shirley Brosius
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides” by Shirley Brosius, Janine Boyer, and Kim Messinger was an encouraging, devotional that is based on 136 days of working through the things that can cause “guilt trips” and turning them into joy rides, essentially turning our perspective from looking at the worse of things and seeing things for the potential that God has to bless our lives with.

Each day is a short, 5 minute reading, that makes this a great devotional for those who are always on the go and looking for a way to seek wisdom through God’s word, while navigating through some of life’s issues that can distract us from the bigger issues in life.

From the publisher, “Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides”, is about:
Women today are busy, stressed, and guilt-ridden, yet they long to develop their spiritual sides. Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides offers inspirational thoughts based on scripture–brief enough to be read during a television commercial, yet insightful enough to open your eyes to the grace of God on days you change diapers and/or lead corporate meetings. Each reading suggests a “Guilt Trip to Avoid” and ends with a way to “Take the Joy Ride.” The book includes six months of daily readings so that you may establish a habit of connecting with God. Readings are listed under the letters G-R-A-C-E, representing God, Relationships, Acceptance, Challenges and Emotions.

The coauthors hope these meaningful readings will help you deal with guilt–both real and imagined. By applying the insights shared in Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides, you may develop a calmer, less guilt-ridden life-style and become better equipped to function as wives, mothers and friends. Younger women often develop patterns of thinking and experience feelings of guilt that carry over into their mature years, so women of all ages will find this book helpful,

and wow does this book deliver and more.

I like how the readings were listed as the author(s) promised, through the acronym, G-R-A-C-E and isn’t it true that God doesn’t expect us to be perfect, for His grace is sufficient, but He does call for us to trust Him and “….leaning not on your own understanding (ref Proverbs 3:5-6), the book, “Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides”,helps us on learning to lean on Him through the issues that we may find challenging.

As women, its easy to get caught in the, “we have to do it all” and with it…the fact we can be tied up with our emotions, be it by outside influences or internal, “Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides” helps readers to learn to live a life that isn’t burden by constant guilt, be it real, imagine or self-impose, but to learn to trust in God, and learn to be strong and confident as individuals, wives, mothers and friends.

If you, yourself, find yourself struggling with feelings of guilt, maybe you’re not good enough, just self questioning yourself or even just having a hard time saying no to others, to time, to whatever it is, that you feel weighs you down….Check out, “Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides” and learn to enjoy life just a little bit more.

Guilt! She pokes you as you write about your quaint, eccentric aunt. She grabs you as you wander from e-mail to Facebook to laundry instead of focusing on your work. She kicks you as you complain about your husband to a friend.

Have you noticed? Women seem riddled with guilt. And it’s hard to know if guilt is legitimate or simply a product of our imaginations. After all, should we really feel guilty about things over which we have no control?

We are not perfect. We have no control over some things, so it’s no use feeling guilty. We can’t do it all.

Seeking the Elusive Hard Boiled Egg

Photobucket

You would think making hard boiled eggs would be no big deal, but it seems when it comes to making them, I’m “hard boiled egg challenged” beyond belief that I wasted a good carton of eggs trying.

I received some pretty good tips on my facebook page on how to make, actual edible hard boiled eggs, that I’m anxious to try in the very near future.

There is even a suggestion for an egg timer so you can make either soft boiled or hard boiled eggs, that I really want to try out, but in the meantime, just making a hard boiled egg that doesn’t cracked while in the boiling water, or when I wait the allotted time, doesn’t come out runny, would be, nice.

So I’m anxious to look into that….And yes, being the techno geek that I am, I took to Google and even Pinterest to try and figure out, why and what does it take to make a hard boiled egg.

How about you?

Do you have any tips for making, the simple, should be easy, hard boiled egg?

{Book Review} Changing Zip Codes: Finding Community Wherever You’re Transplanted

Changing Zip Codes: Finding Community Wherever You're TransplantedChanging Zip Codes: Finding Community Wherever You’re Transplanted by Carol G. Stratton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Moving is considered one of life’s greatest stresses and rather you are single or a family, bring with it, a lot of unknowns and in a way, can be applied to any situation in our lives where we are face with the great unknown.

In,”Changing Zip Codes: Finding Community Wherever You’re Transplanted”, Carol Stratton, shares her experiences of twenty-two moves and counsels others, who, even with families, find themselves, seeking stability in, essentially a culture of change.

This can range from military families to families who because of un-stable economic times, may have to find themselves relocating for better jobs or even a better way of life, but in the process, find their lives and that of those around them up-rooted.

No longer do we live in a culture, where most people tend to grow up, live and die in the same communities, but more and more families being spread across the country and even the globe, to deal with both cultural and economical needs and for the follower of Christ,”Changing Zip Codes: Finding Community Wherever You’re Transplanted”, helps those who find themselves being uprooted, find that needed stable groundwork as they re-adjust to their new lives and towns.

With the proliferation of social media, its easier to stay in contact with others and even discover new contacts, but at the heart, moving is still life changing, both on a psychological and emotional level.

It makes having something like, “Changing Zip Codes: Finding Community Wherever You’re Transplanted”, very helpful as the reader is not only reassured but given practical tips on how to deal with the adjustments that need to be made.

For example, in “Day One”, Carol shares the following with the reader,
“As you and I adjust to a move, we need to remember that God wants to communicate with us. James 1:5 tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God for it and he will give it to us generously. It might take time to translate into your circumstances, but we serve a God who loves to translate his truth into our lives. Today, believe that whatever decisions you are wrestling with, He will have an answer.”

One, its not easy making the decision to move. There are many factors that have to be considered, both financial and emotional and is it really practical.

Two, no matter what…moving is not an easy over-night thing…sometimes it can be plain unpredictable, and many of us, maybe are currently living away from family or friends and don’t have that support base we need if facing, say, a second, third or tenth move for whatever the reason.

Reading,”Changing Zip Codes: Finding Community Wherever You’re Transplanted” comes in handy, because its having a best friend that will come along with you and no, its not a cure all or provide all the answers, but Carol does show you who and where to go for a foundation of answers that no matter what life throws our way, is always there.

So while the movers are packing the fine china and you’re praying that the china make it to the new place in non-jigsaw puzzle manner….Read, “Changing Zip Codes: Finding Community Wherever You’re Transplanted” and be strengthened and encouraged that no matter where you go, where you and/or your family have to move to you will get through this and in the process, have a basis not only for the community you need but great tips from someone whose been there (twenty-two times)o how to get where you need to go.

***Special thanks to Carol Stratton for sending me a review copy.***

An Active Faith

This Week’s “In Other Words”

“The kind of religion that God requires,
and will accept,
does not consist in weak,
dull, and lifeless “wouldings”–
those weak inclinations that lack convictions–
that raise us but a little above indifference.
God, in His word, greatly insists that we be in good earnest, fervent in spirit, and that our hearts be engaged vigorously in our religion.”

by Jonathan Edwards

Hosted this week by:

Tami of The Next Step

There’s a powerful image to the verse,Hebrews 4:11-12

11 Therefore, let’s make every effort to enter that rest so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience, 12 because God’s word is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates to the point that it separates the soul from the spirit and the joints from the marrow. It’s able to judge the heart’s thoughts and intentions. (Hebrews 4:11-12, Common English Bible)

It calls us to be active and alive and intentional in our walk, our talk and our life and yes it can be very difficult.

There’s no doubt to that, but that is part of the challenge of the growth of being a believer and follower of Christ.

Source: 27.media.tumblr.com via Natalie on Pinterest

Jonathan Edwards quote really seems to help capture what Hebrews 4:12-13 speaks about the bible and of knowing Christ.

This isn’t something you can really just be passive about but to really understand and to know..this is a living, growing, challenging faith that requires us to look just as much at ourselves as well as to others, that it becomes a part of everything that it means to be a Christian.

It’s something where we are warned in the bible, that we will be known, NOT just by what we say, but by our fruits (our actions) too:

15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. (Matthew 7:15-20, King James Version)

That’s pretty intimidating in some ways when you stop and think about it….

It’s not a simple checklist and it’s enough…its all or nothing and nothing in between, as a matter of fact, a quick trip to the MHC (Matthew Henry Commentary) and we get the following warning about the passage, Matthew 7:15-20:

“Nothing so much prevents men from entering the strait gate, and becoming true followers of Christ, as the carnal, soothing, flattering doctrines of those who oppose the truth. They may be known by the drift and effects of their doctrines. Some part of their temper and conduct is contrary to the mind of Christ. Those opinions come not from God that lead to sin. (Mt 7:21-29)”

To add this, MHC continues to tell the reader,

“To be doers of the word, not hearers only.

Christ here shows that it will not be enough to own him for our Master, only in word and tongue. It is necessary to our happiness that we believe in Christ, that we repent of sin, that we live a holy life, that we love one another. This is his will, even our sanctification. Let us take heed of resting in outward privileges and doings, lest we deceive ourselves, and perish eternally, as multitudes do, with a lie in our right hand. Let every one that names the name of Christ, depart from all sin.

There are others, whose religion rests in bare hearing, and it goes no further; their heads are filled with empty notions. These two sorts of hearers are represented as two builders. This parable teaches us to hear and do the sayings of the Lord Jesus: some may seem hard to flesh and blood, but they must be done. Christ is laid for a foundation, and every thing besides Christ is sand. Some build their hopes upon worldly prosperity; others upon an outward profession of religion.

Upon these they venture; but they are all sand, too weak to bear such a fabric as our hopes of heaven. There is a storm coming that will try every man’s work. When God takes away the soul, where is the hope of the hypocrite? The house fell in the storm, when the builder had most need of it, and expected it would be a shelter to him. It fell when it was too late to build another. May the Lord make us wise builders for eternity. Then nothing shall separate us from the love of Christ Jesus.

The multitudes were astonished at the wisdom and power of Christ’s doctrine. And this sermon, ever so often read over, is always new. Every word proves its Author to be Divine. Let us be more and more decided and earnest, making some one or other of these blessednesses and Christian graces the main subject of our thoughts, even for weeks together. Let us not rest in general and confused desires after them, whereby we grasp at all, but catch nothing

What are your thoughts?

Crayola Twistables® Crayons and Highlighting the Bible

The other week, I was asked about the Crayola Twistables® Crayons and wanted to use this week’s post to go a little bit into how they have been a really big help with bible reading/studying.

Now, with everything, there’s always pro’s and con’s and at the end of day, you need to ask yourself, some of the following questions:

1. What are your study habits like?

2. What type of highlighting and underlining do you do?

Some people really get into highlighting and underlining to the point they have personal, complicated systems that reads more in depth than the Dewey Decimal system.

3. You want something that if you want to use at church, or away from home, you won’t feel like you’re carrying everything, including the kitchen sink with you.

For myself, I really have loved the use of the, Crayola Twistables® Crayons, because they offer a variety of colors from an 8 count to 30 count (and for personal disclaimer, not being compensated by Crayola Twistables® Crayons, I just like the fact that for once I found something that doesn’t rip, or bleed through the bible pages and leaves the pages still readable).

The biggest pro about using these, has been the fact that when you mark or underline passages or words in the bible, you have control over the intensity of the color and you don’t have to worry about ripping the pages after you are done.

This helps keep the eye from being distracted reading God’s word while all the while still leaving space for personal notes and observations with a pen.

The con, for me, is that its pretty bulky carrying 8, or even 30 count twistables, so I’m still back to the 4 color bic pen that I use on Sunday’s when in bible study class or listening to a sermon and I try to take time, when we get home, to review that morning’s sermon and follow up with any highlighting or underlining of anything that just really has stood out or hit me at the heart.

I wish that Sharpie would offer a non-bleeding, non-color intensity version, because I just really love Sharpies, but I can’t really say I don’t like Crayola Twistables® Crayons, either since they do their job well.

So if you are looking for an answer to dry  highlighters that still drag at pages or using highlighters that bleed, using, Crayola Twistables® Crayons, are an inexpensive alternative to the more expensive bible highlighters that do the same job as these crayons, but tend to be a little more pricey.

How about you?

Have you found anything that works like the Crayola Twistables® Crayons so you can have the variety of color and use while reading and studying your bible?

Playing with nail polish

Photobucket

There’s a really neat blog called, “Chloe’s Nails“that basically shows you how to do, DIY, nail polishes, and its been inspiring how to do something as basic as French Manicures without having to go to the nail salon.

This is pretty helpful for a busy mom who likes to “dazzle her nails”, keep it simple, or use the always fashionable, French Manicure.

However, its hard not to look through Pinterest and even through, “Chloe’s Nails” and think….maybe, probrably, kinda, would’ve, like something that is more bold and even then, just something that is more fun.

The thing I love about Pinterest is how others can share the things they have discovered, that maybe, at one time or another, we’ve all thought, I wonder, or wish we could do and now, we can learn on our own.

For instance, the French Manicure; This is a personal favorite, mostly because its great for daily wear and perfect for any situations.

One thing that I learned from, “Chloe’s Nails” is the use of old fashion scotch tape. Yes…scotch tape, for a guide when applying the white tip, and if you are more daring, well…any color, the sky isn’t the limit.

Source: blog.birchbox.com via Leah on Pinterest

I know…you’re thinking…scotch tape? Really, but seriously….just googled, go by “Chloe’s Nails” and even on Pinterest and it’s really inspiring the things you can do with scotch tape to liven up the nails.

Source: chloesnails.blogspot.com via Joy on Pinterest

Admittedly, most of the time I just do a basic French Manicure, but after seeing what other’s can do, its easy to change one’s mind and be more daring.

How could you not, after seeing with basic tools that most of us have around the house, it’s not that hard to be a little creative and go beyond the basic, solid nail polish, or if you are able to do French Manicures on your own, liven it up a bit, with say…two different colors.

Maybe coordinate it with an outfit.

Special event?

Just in a silly mood?

Whatever the case, it’s hard to not admit, its really fun what can be done with nail polish, scotch tape and a little bit of imagination.

What do you use to highlight/mark your bible?

Out of curiosity, I asked how many mark and highlight in your bible (poll is still open here, if you would still like to vote/chime in) and really appreciate the response. Today, I wanted to hear from all of you, do you use anything particularly to mark or highlight in your bible? For me, its been a mixture of using a 4 point Bic pen, pencil (easy to write and erase), and crayola twistables, because they,

1. Will not bleed,

2. Colors are not too dark,

3. I can adjust the highlighting/or underlining,

4. For thin, onion skin bibles, its friendly though I would recommend not pressing down to hard, due to still risk of tearing the paper easily.

How about yourself?

What is your standard marking/highlighting tools that you use in your own bible?
