“Mornings with Jesus 2012″ Book Review and Giveaway-Giveaway Closed

Mornings with Jesus 2012: Daily Encouragement for Your Soul 366 DevotionsMornings with Jesus 2012: Daily Encouragement for Your Soul 366 Devotions by Judy Baer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Mornings with Jesus 2012: Daily Encouragement for Your Soul 366 Devotions” is a series of selected devotionals by Judy Baer, Gwen Ford Faulkenberry, Tricia Goyer, Sharon Hinck, Keri Wyatt Kent, Erin Keeley Marshall and Camy Tang that will help you start each morning with a selected passage from the bible, personal devotional to inspire and encourage and followed at the end of each day with a,”Faith Step” to contemplate on, throughout the day.

I really enjoy using these devotionals and thought this would be perfect for busy moms who are struggling to balance being a Christian, a mom, a wife and in some cases, if they work in or outside the home, an employee, while maintaining a contemplative and growing relationship with our Father in Heaven.

Everything is a quick five minute read and for the busy mom (and women, not just moms) who are on the go, and with this being available on Kindle and Nook, talk about a great, while on the way to work, dropping or picking up the kids at school, waiting at the doctor, quick, morning/afternoon/or evening boost.

Although,”Mornings with Jesus 2012: Daily Encouragement for Your Soul 366 Devotions” is a light read for many who may prefer something “heavier” and more in depth, I found,”Mornings with Jesus 2012: Daily Encouragement for Your Soul 366 Devotions” to be really good for the busy moms (and women) that are out there and just don’t have time for that sit down, thirty minute to hour devotional, or maybe you are struggling to start a quiet time/devotional period to just dwell in God’s word, this captures the best of both worlds, since sometimes what we need, is a quick faith boost and the faith lifts that are included at the end of each devotional is just right for all of us who need that motivation to move through the day or if we find ourselves struggling through a difficult time or just plain bad day.

As I read, “Mornings with Jesus 2012: Daily Encouragement for Your Soul 366 Devotions”, I couldn’t help but think…this would make a fantastic app if you have a smartphone or iphone.

The devotionals are relevant to today’s busy world and many women find themselves balancing many roles in today’s modern and complicated world will find this as a way to set down the needed roots to keep them grounded.

These are a great group of inspiring women who, in and through Christ, will help lift up your day (or if you read it at night, end the night with inspiring encouragement for the next day), and so well worth to check out, “”Mornings with Jesus 2012: Daily Encouragement for Your Soul”.

For a little encouragement of what this book is about, here’s what the publisher has to say about the book:

“Be still and know that I am God.” is one of the most beautiful verses from the Bible, but it’s not easy to practice in this busy world. Mornings with Jesus will help you do just that—“be still” in Jesus’ beautiful and powerful presence. For those who are seeking a deeper experience in their relationship with Christ, Mornings with Jesus offers a fresh perspective of who Jesus is (the Healer, the Son of God, the Comforter, the Good Shepherd) and what that means for day-to-day life. With a warm and friendly voice, 365 short devotional writings on the character and teachings of Jesus encourage readers to greet each day by drawing near to Him and inviting His presence into their day. Spend time with Jesus at the beginning of each day and experience His nearness and peace in a new way throughout the year. Each day’s selection includes:

  • a Bible verse
  • an entry based on Jesus: His words, miracles, and parables; His wisdom, compassion, and comfort; His mystery, power, divinity, and humanity
  • a “faith step” that will inspire and challenge readers to apply the day’s message to their lives”

Using this devotional, day 1, January 1, the first devotional was over, Mark 1:35

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. (NIV)

WOW..what a reminder about starting off the New Year and just each day, praying and spending time, FIRST, with our Father in Heaven; Though we may not always feel like we have time, this is an inspiring devotional to encourage you that we are all busy women, with many different seasons going on in our life, and we can be encouraged and inspired to find time with our Father in Heaven!

To make this a little fun, I am hosting a giveaway for your own copy of, ”
Mornings with Jesus 2012: Daily Encouragement for Your Soul 366 Devotions” and one lucky winner will be picked on January 31, 2012.

Married Mom, Solo Parent: Finding God’s Strength to Face the Challenge by Carla Coroy Book Review and Blog Tour

Married Mom, Solo Parent: Finding God's Strength to Face the ChallengeMarried Mom, Solo Parent: Finding God’s Strength to Face the Challenge by Carla Coroy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

By the time I was finished with,”Married Mom, Solo Parent”, it was dog earred, highlighted, and post-it noted, everywhere; This is a book that I would recommend for moms who find themselves in that awkward category of, not single, but feeling not married as their spouses are away due to military, maybe their husband’s jobs requires him to be on the road for days, weeks, or even months at the time, or they are in situations where a spouse has illnesses that has made it difficult to be an active partner in the marriage, struggling with addiction, or just any situation, that has left the married mom, on her own and yet married.

This is not a book that trashes the husband, but instead, as the author, Carla Anne Coroy, loving shares in the preface, “A solo parent is someone who is raising children and running a home and family alone” (pg.11), and geared toward married women whose husbands jobs require them to be away from home majority of the time.

Addressing topical issues such as discipline, chore divisions, life in the community and more, “Married Mom, Solo Parent”, doesn’t demonizes husbands whose keep depends on them, often working away from the home, bringing to mind, women whose husbands are in the military or are workaholics and even if they aren’t workaholics, just required to travel as part of their job requirement, Carla Anne Coroy uses both grace, humor, honesty and Scripture to help encourage married women on how to balance: life, raising children and being a wife and woman.

I like how on page 45, Carla Anne Coroy shared honestly, the double jeopardy that a married woman, whose solo parenting feels when she (Carla Anne Coroy) shares the following observation:

“Many solo parents are afraid of being honest, at least out loud, about the situation they are in. After years of hearing that we need to respect, honor and support our husbands, we find it difficult to speak truth when it does not make shine. We’re afraid of being the woman who trashes her husband with her words or ruins his reputation in his absence. So we carry the shame: shame of being the unsatisfied wife, of spinning a yarn of excuses, of what our situation may symbolize or predict.”

She presents hope though when she later says,”It took me many years to respectfully tell the truth regarding Trent’s choices. We have to remember that God calls us to be imitators of Christ. Jesus often offended others. As a matter of fact, he was called the Rock of Offense (Rom 9:33 NASB,KJV). Naturally, we need to be careful. The truth we speek needs to be covered in love”.

With a chapter, written by her husband, sharing a husband’s viewpoint and offering from a male perspective, what husbands usually see and/or don’t often say about a “Married Mom, Solo Parent”, this is a book that needs to be read by those who are going through the,”Married Mom, Solo Parent” stages in their life and also should and need to be read not only by those who may know of women in those situations, to help gain a better insight of what life is really like for the, “Married Mom, Solo Parent”, but even by those who are involved in the church in whatever capacity, for a better understanding of how the body of Christ can reach out to those moms who are not single, but not fully married either.

Painful examples are shared by Carla Coroy, such as being rejected by a church’s “handyman” service offered to single moms who don’t have husbands in their lives, by sheer virtue, she was married, although her husband was away and not actively involved in the family’s life, during that time period.

It led to thoughts…not only just her experience, but what of moms whose spouses were in the military….were their needs for help around the home, be it, fixing the sink, or in Carla’s case, needing help, installing fans in the homes, being ignored and how we as a society, not only has changed, but that reaching out to the community, also means not ignoring the fact, that by virtue of “being married” does that mean, a family always have, one of the parent, available, be it due to medical related reasons, or in this case, one of the spouse, being required to be out of town, leaving the other spouse, with the full brunt of the responsibility.

I bristled at the story of how Carla and her family were excluded at a family dinner sponsored by a church and how she ended up sitting alone, quietly crying, with her kids, and yet, as Christians, are we not all members of the same family, irregardless, if we are single, married or the spouse is not at home for whatever reason.

In addition to encouraging words of scripture and encouragement, that as a, “Married Mom, Solo Parent”, I was floored by the statistics that Carla shared, that many of us, may not think about or take for granted, such as the fact that 84% of “married single moms” find vehicle maintenance and repair a difficulty.

One of the first two chapters, “This is Not what I signed up for” and “The Emotions of a Solo Parents”, really hit hard to the root of the matter, for many women, who find themselves, living separate lives, while their husbands were not at home to “help out”, and Carla does a wonderful job of gently encouraging, “Married Mom, Solo Parent” to find ways to not only confront their emotions, but how to deal with their emotions in a way that doesn’t adversely affect the marriage.

I could relate to the feelings that Carla shared and the helpful advice she offers to,”Married Mom, Solo Parent”, who feel alone and how to find group support in the form of through bible studies, going to the park, joining mom groups and if that doesn’t work, find ways, oneself, to get out of the comfort zone and connect with other moms, particularly, others moms who are going through the same, awkward life style, of the mom, often having to play both duties, while dad is away.

She also offers realistic and sound ways to honoring and loving the man in your life, even if its often long distance and offers a needed reminder, that no matter what, he is the father, that the kids need.

Its easy to approach situations, like this, with cynicism, or as Carla Coroy shares in the book, feeling “emotional divorce” already from your husband, but she shows there is not only life, but hope and there is a relationship that can happen and that the “Married Mom, Solo Parent” and her spouse can make things work.

It’s difficult to go over everything that is in the book, in a review, but this is a much needed book, in today’s world and as Carla Coroy shared in the preface,

“Each solo parent has a unique set of circumstances. Your struggles will be different from mine. Every generation has had its share of married solo parents. Yet somewhere along the line, we’ve forgotten how it is done: how a woman with a husband does the job of raising her kdis when he is not around.”

If you are one of these moms, know someone who is, want to understand more about the married single mom, or part of a church seeking to reach moms who are married and yet solo parenting their kids while their spouses are away for indefinite times for whatever the reason, this is a book that all must read and comes highly recommended.

“Married Mom, Solo Parent” is an excellent book and a humbling read and if you are a “Married Single Mom”, essentially a mom who, although married, but due to your spouse not being home fully all the time, due to his job, it’s so easy for the reader to relate and know they are not alone going through being a “Married Mom, Solo Parent”.

Carla Coroy doesn’t promise that it will be easy and there are tears, but there is also laughter, and hope and smiles. Check out,”Married Mom, Solo Parent” and discovered more about what it means to be a, “Married Mom, Solo Parent” and how no matter what, to God be all the glory, that for the, “Married Mom, Solo Parent”, there is hope, there is encouragement and there is strength.

Publisher’s Description of the Book:
For married women who feel like single parents.

Bookstore shelves are full of parenting resources for moms who are newly divorced or widowed. But where do moms turn if they feel like a single parent–but they’re not? Whether he is away on business, deployed in the military, or obsessing over a computer game, dad may not be available for a variety of reasons. Moms who parent in this situation still need help and don’t necessarily relate to the advice given in divorce recovery or single parenting resources.

Married Mom, Solo Parent is a common-sense, down-to-earth look at the struggles wives and mothers face when their husband is not actively involved in family life. Writing from her own experience as a married single mom, Carla Anne Coroy will help wives and mothers sort through their questions, such as: Can I do this alone? How do I raise kids to honor their father? How do I give my children a healthy perspective of marriage if they never see one in action? With practical suggestions, anecdotes, and biblical teaching, this book will encourage moms to see their position as a high calling, to find healing for their worries and frustrations, and to tap into God’s strength for help in facing the daily challenge of being a married mom, solo parent.

“Love on the Line” Book Review and Giveaway

Love on the LineLove on the Line by Deeanne Gist

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Love on the Line” by Deeanne Gist, is not your usual historical romance and that made,”Love on the Line” all the more a fun read! The story of a strong, independent woman and a Texas Ranger, undercover, set in the not so wild frontier of Texas,”Love on the Line” had all the elements of a perfect Friday night reading, to cozy up with, next to the fire, with a rich, hot chocolate on the table beside you.

The characters are well developed, the background for the story, well researched, and just even the backstory, of the main character, Georgie Gail, will have the reader, caught up till the very end of this wildly, funny, filled with charm, reading.

What makes,”Love on the Line” just a sweet and fun read, is that this is not your usual, sugary love story, but a story about standing up for what you believe in, about honesty, about the strength of character, that makes this book stand out as a Christian based story, historical fiction with a perfect touch of romance that is really more touching then ever, that will leave the reader, swooning for a “Luke Palmer” who is dashing though at the same time, charming as he meets his match with headstrong, Georgie Gail.

“Love on the Line” is very original and fun at the same time and this is not a “girly” book, but a solid read, that is both smart and very endearing and, if you’re like me, find it so hard to put down and have to keep reading till the end.

I’m normally not a big fan of romance novels, so with “Love on the Line”, instead I find a very smartly written book that has the element of romance, that is sweet and endearing, yet at the same time, the characters are strong in their own right and hold out as characters, on their own, that you will find yourself just growing close with and silently cheering out when you realize, “Wait..this has romance in it too”.

What I really enjoyed as well about,”Love on the Line” is that Georgie Gail is not a helpless damsel in distress; She is a strong, well rounded character who can hold her own but at the same time, not afraid to let her femininity show through, and even though she proves she can hold her own in a man’s world, at the same time, allows herself to be vulnerable and open when love finds her heart.

Deeanne Gist, perfectly writes a story that you will find yourself recommending to friends to read, placing it in your purse or backpack to bring on vacation, or if you have a Nook or Kindle, downloading it to read, while the fire is going or by the pool in the summertime.

Either way, “Love on the Line” left me feeling, for a historical fiction, it captured the time period wonderfully and had enough romance, for the romantic in me to indulge in a little, “That is so sweet”.

Ms. Gist, really brings the characters to life and writes the story in such detail that its not overwhelming, but helps the reader, just have a mental image of what they think the characters are thinking, feeling and must look that I fear if a movie was made, I could only hope it would match up to how delightful the book, itself is.

With the holidays around the corner, and you’re looking for a book to take with you on vacation, or just to read while warming up by the fire, drop by Georgie Gail’s, small hometown, and discover,”Love on the Line”.

Zombie Church:Breathing Life Back into the Body of Christ Book Review

Zombie Church: Breathing Life Back into the Body of ChristZombie Church: Breathing Life Back into the Body of Christ by Tyler Edwards

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Covered with post it notes, filled with highlighted passages and lovingly dog-eared, “Zombie Church:Breathing Life Back into the Body of Christ”, turned out to be an in depth, fascinating reading, that is written by a pastor himself, Tyler Edwards, who explores how the church is dying, just going through the motions and how we, the church body, can breathe new life into a “Zombie Church”.

Off hand, the title may seem misleading and even questionable, but reading the book, this is a rich, scriptural filled look into how churches today are losing track from their Acts counterparts.

Filled with provocative anecdotes that anyone whose experienced a cold church can relate to, “Zombie Church” isn’t a judgmental writing, or even cynical look at Christians and the church, but instead, an eye opening, heartfelt look at how the church of the 21st century is losing its way.

From sharing about a church that whittle down to nine members that didn’t seem to really care about their church, other than the fact that it was a church that they had always gone to, to churches that you and I have no doubt experienced at some point or time, “Zombie Church” will open the eyes of the state of churches today.

In an example that is shared,Tyler Edwards writes,“When a church stops making a difference in its community, then it’s probably drifting away from the Holy Spirit”.

He writes earlier in the book,“When the church neglects the commission of Jesus-stops ministering to the poor and the hurting and stops sharing the love of God with others-then it stops living. It just exists and keeps on existing. Undead. How can a church offer the eternal life of God if it does not have life in its midst”.

This is such an eye opening, humbling book to read and yet its not ugly or being condescending; It presents a radical but entertaining and also strives to share what is missing in today’s churches and how in the process, the church may not so much as dying, but neither is it living either.

Throughout the book, I found myself, post it notes in hand and a highlighter, marking spots to re-read or to share and even quote from and other’s to highlight to go back, mull over some more and reflect at the honesty that Tyler Edwards is sharing from not only just a pastor’s perspective, but a follower of Christ, perspective on, what seems to be an unspoken issue with the church.

Its not an easy thing to discuss about, but it is something that we need to talk about and Tyler Edwards does in an eye catching way that definitely does what it intends….draw attention, creates discussion, and causes the reader, to go…what does zombies have to do with church, only to discover, in often humbling way, what “Zombie Church” seeks to convey to the reader.

It’s honest, its thought provoking, it tongue in the cheek, commends a second look, its blunt where it needs to be blunt, but in a refreshing loving way that needs to be addressed and not pushed under the rug, “Zombie Church” just revitalizes how we view not just going to church, but how we can be more living, active members of the church body and from within reach out to the community as well.

I truly enjoy reading this book and felt that Tyler Edwards, wonderfully addressed even the issues that many of us may have at one time or another, but was too afraid or intimidated to share with others such as the part about having those days , where we wake up on a Sunday morning and just wanted to stay home.

Don’t get the statement wrong, “Zombie Church” isn’t discouraging going to church, but it is asking and hitting in both wit and keen observation, why do so many churches seem to have trouble either growing, keeping their members or having that often huge disconnect with their local communities.

I love hearing from a pastor say so honestly, “There are Zombie churches, and many of us have been burned by them.” Sadly that is true for many, who find themselves going to church, craving, wanting that relationship with Christ, but in the words of Brennan Manning of Newsboys,“The single greatest cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable”

For those who are truly wanting to know and grow and have a mature, loving relationships, its often not Christ himself, but those around them, that makes it difficult to find that much needed fellowship and with,”Zombie Church”, many of the weaknesses and symptoms of a “Zombie Church” is both explored along with biblical based cures to dealing with a,”Zombie Church”.

As Tyler Edwards shared, wisely,“But that’s not an acceptable reason to walk away from the church altogether. To do so is to disobey the word of God.” as outlined in John 14:15,24).

Instead, you will find the symptoms, but also strong encouragement of not only how to find a living church filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit, but also tips of discouraging a “Zombie Church”.

We are reminded that neglecting church, we risk falling into the sins of our past, and not growing ourselves, but becoming members of the, “Living Dead” ourselves, and a wise observation that stopping church, leads not to growth, but a slide into sin.

So, the solution?

Awaken the slumbering church.

….and well…you have to read the book, yourself to find out more how that is done, but reading, “Zombie Church:Breathing Life Back into the Body of Christ”, the reader will find out that there is always hope and it is so well worth it that I would recommend it to the people who were burnt by church, those who find themselves faced with a “Zombie Church” and this is a great book to help not only encourage but keep in minds ways to avoid becoming a “Zombie Church”.

It’s worth the time and I so recommend keeping some post it notes and a highlighter, and maybe a pen on hand….you’ll find yourself nodding in agreement, finding a little bit of yourself or maybe a personal experience that you can relate to in, “Zombie Church”, but more than anything, a reminder to us all…what we, as a body and as members and as brothers and sisters, need to remember, to avoid and to discourage in the church.

Get the book.

It’s just that good.

Publisher’s Note about the Book

There is something missing in the church today. Stuck in a rut of routines and rituals, the church is caught up in doing what it is “supposed to do” but is lacking the true essence of what it is supposed to provide: life. Real faith–and a real relationship with Jesus–is not about playing by the rules, attending services, and praying before meals. Real faith is more than religion.

Believing there is a way to breathe life back into the church, Tyler Edwards adopts a contemporary and entertaining metaphor–zombies–to highlight and challenge the problematic attitude of today’s believers.

Written for the discouraged, disenfranchised, and anyone unsatisfied with their same-old church routine, Zombie Church challenges readers to turn away from hollow religious practices, which characterize “zombie Christianity,” and turn toward a radical relationship with Jesus.

While other books have addressed legalism in the church, this is the only book that effectively capitalizes on a popular entertainment genre in order to diagnose and correct the problem. Realizing that even his own church is part of that problem, Edwards has written an accessible and often humorous book that will help believers change the Spirit-draining (or life-draining) habits that stop them from achieving a full, fulfilling life in Christ.

“Reclaiming Lily” Book Review

Reclaiming LilyReclaiming Lily by Patti Lacy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Reclaiming Lily” is a beautiful,  flawlessly written book, that would capture the heart and tears in the eyes, as the reader travels with the characters on a journey of discovery and understanding.

Set in Texas, and inter-spaced with tales of one of the characters experiences, growing up in revolutionary China, the reader is brought into the lives of two very different set of families, that are united through a common love and concern for Lily, the adopted daughter of Gloria and Andrew.

If I could rate,”Reclaiming Lily” with tissue boxes, I would have to say, you would need three tissue boxes (for good measure) prior to starting this book; Covering themes of adoption, family, what is family, mother-daughter relationships, faith, finding hope, and bridging cultural divides, one would think…how could an author manage to cover all that, but Patti Lacy is able to do that and more with, “Reclaiming Lily”.

By the time, I was finished with the book, I was bawling with tears of sadness and joy at the tightly woven story of two families, in two different countries, tightly woven in one girl, and the often complicated relationships and understandings that are prevalent with adoptions.

Patti Lacy, brilliantly, weaves a tale of two different cultures and presents to the reader, strong characters, that by the end of the book, you will find yourself captivated and unable to let go of the book, even knowing you’re at the end.

Normally, when writing about very strong characters, it seems difficult to balance, the many stories going on, but “Reclaiming Lily” is an amazingly strong book, that draws the readers in and before you know it, you are lost within the characters that are incredibly fleshed out, with rich, complicated backgrounds and present day struggles.

There are no confusions of where the story going, there is not finding oneself on rabbit trails, instead, there is a feeling, of, “I have to know more, don’t stop, not here, go on”.

Patti Lacy, presents real people, with real issues, and real emotions, that one would find in an often complicated situation of different values, beliefs and cultures and weaves together, seamlessly, a story of growth, understanding, and eye opening faith that just left me breathless with each page.

What words can describe how as much I would like to share this book with others, this is one of those rare gems, I hesitate to give out,for fear of not getting it back, but yet find myself, going, “You HAVE to read this book; It’s not just amazing, but just will take your breathe away”.

If you are seeking a story about the power of love, hope and what is family, I highly recommend to read, “Reclaiming Lily”.

Too Blessed to Be Stressed Book Tour

“Reading, “Too Blessed to be Stressed”, I could not only relate to reading the book, but felt like I was living parts of it as I prepare for a new school year, praying and worrying about a family member who suffered a stroke, coped with an unprecedented heat wave and drought and all through it, moments of not having coffee in the house.

Living in today’s world of distractions, life changes that seem to happen on a dime and just unpredicatable events, “Too Blessed to be Stressed” is a witty, easy to read, but soul connecting book, that will help many women, who find themselves, feeling like they are drowning in what life might be throwing at them.

The book cover is colorful, and even the pages within are easy to read, straight to the point, filled with encouraging scripture and reminders, personal insights and stories, and just reminders to many of us to breathe…….

Who among us, find us trying to out compete Martha while eyeing Mary and wishing we were like her, but rather than find the time, instead, find ourselves running in a hamster wheel of busyness that by the end of the day, leaves us exhausted.

“Too Blessed to be Stressed” is a book, I would recommend for moms who are finding themselves having to return to the workplace due to financial reasons, maybe you’re homeschooling for the first time, or the eleventh time….or know of someone in your life going through a hard or difficult time.

This is a book, that will promise a smile, draw a breathe of, its okay to take a breathe, and encourage women to seek Him all the more, through all of life’s craziness.

The irony of reading, “Too Blessed to be Stressed”, is that I found myself at a time of being disorganized, being stress and as I sat down to read the book, laughing nervously at myself, at the irony, of how even stressed out it is easy to get without realizing it.

You too, would find yourself, breathing a little easier, chuckling at yourself and taking that much needed step back, as you read, “Too Blessed to be Stressed”. There’s more dear readers!

To celebrate the release of her latest laugh-out-loud book, Too Blessed to Be Stressed, Debora Coty is hosting the Too Blessed to Be Stressed KINDLE Giveaway!

“Branded” Book Review by Tim Sinclair

Branded: Sharing Jesus with a Consumer CultureReading, “Branded” by Tim Sinclair, I had really mixed feelings about attributing sharing the Gospel on the same level as marketing, but this is a book, that like all books, have to read with discretion and in context of what exactly is trying to be reached overall and taking care too, not to be too picky to see the context of the book. It is easy for someone to think, what does marketing have to do with sharing the Gospel and bring up with it, negative connotations of what marketing would imply.
With,”Branded”, Tim Sinclair shares with wit and observations of ways sharing one’s faith to help better connect with many, in today’s world, who may not be speaking the same language that is being taught in our churches.

On page 95 of “Branded”, Tim relates an experience he had on the road and goes, “He was creating a first impression without every looking me in the eye. He was pushing me away before I had the chance to get close. From hundreds of feet away, it was clear that his interests, values and personality couldn’t be more different from mine“.

Tim continue with later on,”Again, its not about changing our message. It’s about changing the method with which we share it”.

This is not an easy book to read; It will take people out of their comfort zone and that is sometimes a good thing and a necessary thing.

In the last chapter, “What If”; After the shock, of wait, but this isn’t what I’m used to hearing passes, Tim, offers some down to earth, biblical based reasons that really challenges the follower of Christ, to re-evaluate how they are thinking and approaching sharing the Gospel to others.

The book doesn’t advocate, not sharing the Gospel, but rather, take a careful look of how the Gospel is being shared.

Tim offers this challenging look on page 39, “…But what happens when we step out into the real world, where situations aren’t so cut-and-dried”?

I like “Branded” because its’ both a hard, “ouch” book to read and also a, “hey, this isn’t a watering down but rather, look how are we approaching look at things”.

My intial thought was..whoa whoa…lukewarmness to is this just over the fence, cold, but then realize, its a witty, but honest and hey, real life look of how are we sharing His word…sometimes, its just a simple, honest, “Hey I’m just there” approach”…a non-one size fits all, but its not about , “Fine whatever” approach either.

Tim hits the issue on the head when he shares on page, 35,”Applying faith to this equation then would indicate that for non-Christians to value Jesus, they need to see that He can meet their needs and they need a favorable perception of Him. They need both head knowledge and heart feeling. They need information and inspiration. One side without the other is useless. Or in this case, worthless“.
This brought me to mind,
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; (1 Peter 3:15, New King James Version)

“Branded” is a book that will gently, though firmly and lovingly, though at times, it may not feel like that, show, how in today’s multimedia, social media, consumer based, marketing based, ad-driven world, that we can share the Gospel without changing the message and still hold on to His Word.

Each Life is Unique by Lucinda Secrest McDowell-An Encouragement for Moms by Moms

Each Life is Unique by Lucinda Secrest McDowell

“God’s divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. II Peter 1.3 (NIV)

Moms, God wants you to know that He has given you everything you need for life — your unique life. He does not plan to give you what you might need to live the life of your best friend, or your neighbor, or even your favorite mother-model. No, God has called you to the life that He planned. I suspect that for most of us, it didn’t turn out to be the life we thought it might be… so long ago when we were young and dreaming of ‘growing up.’

On Mother’s Day I often recall my own dreams to one day be a mother. I grew up playing with dolls and looking to my own Mama as a model for that particular role in life. However, by the time I reached my thirties I was still not a mother! God did, however, have a plan. It just wasn’t what I imagined.

My own unique life would find me becoming a mother through the adoption of my first three children who were ages 9, 7 and 4; and then much later giving birth to our fourth child. Of course I was shocked when God revealed this to me, but I was ecstatic as well. It’s as though I could hear Him saying, “Well, you’re not getting any younger so I’m just going to just give you a jump start with three at one time!”

A huge blessing! A huge adjustment! A joy and a struggle. Change is often like that, isn’t it? We finally get what we want then we have to deal with it. May I just offer a bit of advice if you just got a great answer to prayer, but perhaps not in the way or form you imagined? Just receive it. Embrace it. And be willing to move forward into a new paradigm for your life. So what if you’re not like all the other mothers you know? So what if you’re not like your own mother? So what if your family unit is different? I guarantee God has a plan.

Not only did he want me to embrace my own story, but He called me as a mother to do perhaps one of the most important tasks of all — to nurture my children to live their own unique lives. Not for me to try and squeeze them into what I hoped and dreamed they would be. Not for me to try and live my life through them. But to recognize how God made them, gifted them, and called them to their own special place.

All of my 4 kids are different from one another. Let’s take sports, for instance: I have one child who wins gold medals in international tennis competition, one who is a born equestrian, another who competes nationally in obstacle course shooting matches, and yet another who manages to dance onstage in 3 inch heels, do cartwheels and splits while singing at the same time. Now, honestly, I do none of these things. And yet they do.

I don’t remember placing my order with God for these things.  But I do remember when that tennis player turned 9 years old and I enrolled him in Special Olympics for the first time and how it changed his life… and ours. I remember getting a counselor job at an exclusive summer camp so that my daughter could take English riding classes. I remember being a Cub Scout leader (even though I knew nothing about boys) so that son could one day become an Eagle scout and pursue his love of the great outdoors. And yes, I remember enrolling my preschooler in dance lessons. Later when all the little girls were scared to go on stage for the recital, she exclaimed that she had endured a whole year of lessons just so she could go on stage.

Don’t compare yourself to someone else. And don’t live vicariously through your favorite reality show star. Live your own story. And Moms, raise your kids to embrace the unique life God has for them.
Remember, He has given us everything we need for life!

When Mother’s Day is Difficult by Holley Gerth-An Encouragement for Moms by Moms

When Mother’s Day is Difficult by Holley Gerth

I have a confession (anyone surprised?). I have mixed feelings about Mother’s Day.

On one hand, I love celebrating all the women who have made a difference in my life (thanks, Mom!).

On the other hand, a long journey of infertility has left my heart with some tender places.

On May 8th, we’ll celebrate Mother’s Day once again. For many, it’s a time of appreciation and joy. For others, it can be one of the most difficult days of the year. This is often true for women facing infertility, families who have recently experienced the loss of a mother, and many other painful situations.

At one point in my life it seemed as if I couldn’t take another step. In addition to infertility, I was facing several other losses. I felt as if I were in a dark cave. But then I sensed the Lord gently and lovingly speak to my heart, “You may be in a cave, but you still have a choice. You can sit in despair or you can diamond-mine your difficulties.” I decided I was not leaving that time in my life empty-handed. I was taking every hidden blessing I could find. Of course, I still had difficult days. But choosing hope made a difference.

As a reminder, I now wear two rings. The one on the fourth finger of my left hand represents my commitment to my husband. The one on the fourth finger of my right hand is a simple silver band inscribed with the word “hope” and it represents the commitment I have made to God and myself to hold onto hope no matter what happens.

The story of an inspiring woman named Terrie also reminds me to hold onto hope. She endured the loss of four pregnancies and waited seventeen years before adopting a little girl. She told me, “I think one of the most important parts of this journey is learning to trust God. I don’t mean the flippant kind of trust. It’s easy for people to say, ‘You just need to trust God.’ It’s much harder when you’re in the middle of all this pain. But he is trustworthy. Through it all, God has given us an amazing story. I wouldn’t have chosen this road, but he has been with us. I can look back and truly say every step was worth it.”

I don’t know how my journey will end and you probably don’t know how yours will either. I also don’t know how many of you will be silently grieving your losses as we sit in church together on May 8th. But I do know that God sees each one of us. He knows how many hairs are on our heads and how many cares our in our hearts. Whatever you’re going through this Mother’s Day, you’re not facing it alone. As King David, a man who experienced many losses in his life, expressed in Psalm 34:18 NIV, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” May God surround you with love, fill you with hope, and give you strength for each moment—especially this Mother’s Day.
