A tale about a girl and a horse, “Rosie and Scamper” is a story about God, a girl’s love for horses, her family and the power of faith as we meet, Rosie, Scamper, the new horse, Rosie is training for an upcoming horse show and Rosie’s developing friendship with Carrie, the new girl that has moved next door, to Rosie’s Grandmother.
“Rosie and Scamper” is the first in the Sonrise Series that focuses on the stories of an extended, homeschooling family, faith, adventure and family values, that families with homeschooled kids particularly, will find themselves engaged in reading and sharing in the stories and adventures that Vicki Watson’s characters go through, while all the while, learning valuable and enriching lessons that will carry them through life.
Personally, this was a really fun book to read along with my own kids and a book that has already found a treasured spot on their bookshelf, particularly since one of them is of that age, where they are falling in love with horses.
I liked Vicki Watson’s style of writing, for it reminded me so much of the style of “Grandma’s Attic”, the “Little House” books and has that timeless quality that ensures these books will be family treasures to be shared with each generation and not just because it is about horses (and what child isn’t fascinated to some degree by horses), but by the strong central core that centers on family, faith and friendship that every child experiences in their life. In addition, “Rosie and Scamper” had me constantly thinking as well, of the “American Girl” books that is a favorite in the family, which showcase a strong girl role model that provided girls with a positive image.
Perfect for including in home-school or school assignments, “Rosie and Scamper” is well worth introducing in your family, for its wholesome reading, the writing is very clear and not choppy and speaks at a level that encourages good reading that isn’t fluff but at the same time, isn’t too complicated, making this really good books to assign young readers for book reports or just to encourage, a strong reading habit in the home.
The illustrations that are sprinkled throughout the book is beautiful and like the writing, classic, in that this is the type of book, that because of its quality and the obvious love that the author poured into the writing, would find its way, through many generations in the home, and personally brought me back to my own childhood, to a time, when like my kids, I had a love, like it seems with almost every little girl, to own a horse of my own.
I would say that the target age range for the book would be between 8 and 12 years old, though my youngest, being an early reader, quickly got caught up in the book and many a time, would curl up on the couch to read and later talk about Rosie and her horse, Scamper. That’s always a good sign that you are dealing with a book that is and will be well loved and well read.
So parents, if you are looking for a fun, summer read or your a homeschooler looking for a book that your budding reader will enjoy to read for a book report or just to discovered, try out, “Rosie and Scamper”. It is a perfect summer read that captures a growing girl’s independence and love for horses.
Little bit about the Author
My love of horses began when a teenage neighbor offered me my first ride, on the back of her horse. From my 8-year-old perspective, it seemed like the biggest horse in the world. From that moment on, I was addicted. Horses were to become a very important part of my life, although I never could have imagined, at the time, how much God would teach me about Himself and my relationship to Him through these wonderful animals.
The Sonrise Stable series combines my love of God and horses in stories that I hope will help children learn more about both. I have a vision for ten initial books in the series, taking the main characters through one year. Beyond that I’ll see where God leads me.
I have been blessed with three daughters and homeschooled each of them through high school. I enjoy trail riding my Rocky Mountain mare, Nikki, hiking, photography, and playing guitar. I work from home as a web designer and computer programmer and enjoy the variety and flexibility that allows.
