"Good Girls Don't Have to dress Badly"Book Review

Since homeschooling, life has gotten a little bit busier. Scheduling has become an artform. Balancing daily household chores with schooling, a delicate balance act requiring generous cups of coffee and chocolate, but quite truthfully and *gasp*, the one thing I don’t do very well is taking care of myself, short of splashing water on the face in the morning, hair is up in a ponytail and the only time an extra effort (don’t worry, I still brush my teeth every morning and night) is made, is when we go to church, but even then, it’s hair up in a ponytail (plus it’s pretty long and where we live, temperatures are up in the hundreds at time).
So I was intrigued when the option to review “Good Girls don’t have to dress bad” came up, while wondering if the author was tipped off by someone I know about my dressing inabilities.
I don’t dress bad, I dont’ think, but when you’re a mom and a homeschooling teacher, often we dont’ realize that missing that drop of spaghetti stain or wearing a sweat shirt, really isn’t that smart after all.
Plus hubby does like it when I make the extra effort of not looking like I lost a battle with tonight’s dinner and looking like I remember how to clean up after myself.
A Christian speaker and author about fashion and beauty, Shari Braendel, shares tips that are still modest oriented, but how to accept and appreciate the body that our Heavenly Father bless us with and still look our best.
The extra effort really does help, not just physically (eventually we have to let go of that old, worn, stain shirt, no matter how comfortable it feels), but also mentally. Even something as simple of what is the best frame to pick for reading glasses or regular glasses makes a different.
Unlike most fashion books, Shari’s book, “Good Girls don’t have to dress bad” also covers topics such as modesty and what does our clothes say such as this quick excerpt where she shares,
“What is sin when it comes to how we dress? It’s wearing clothes that may ause guyts to think or act in a ways we wouldn’t want to be responsible for.”

Not going to see that in Vanity Fair.

Not much is touch on cosmetics which is actually fine and instead, what little is written, is shared how to wear make-up that is more natural versus showy, but the bulk of the book is more focused on clothes and tips of what to wear for the Christian lady.

I also enjoy how Shari covers how to talk to our daughters about modesty (and how we’re not to dress to try and impress them either), which in today’s world is a very very vital concern as standards seem more and more lax in the fashion department not just for women but also for impressionable teenage daughters and young girls.

A great look into how to dress both modestly and also in a way that helps us feel good about ourselves, “Good Girls Don’t Have to dress Badly” is a great book to have and even to go over with our daughters.
