12 Pearls of Christmas-Magnificant

Magnificat
by Anna Joujan

Holy. Holy. Holy is the Lord. The familiar catch of breath. The sting in the eyes. And the tears begin to flow with the falling rain. Or do the tears fall with the flowing rain. What is it in these words that I whisper that wrenches at my heart so? Why does Mary’s prayer touch the core of my being, so many centuries after it was spoken?

I think it must be because I know that she was just a girl, just a human being, with a woman’s heart like my own. And so, when I hear her wondering words, I can feel with her the emotion she must have felt. To bear the son of God-what wondrous mystery, what glorious honour! And she was, like me, just a young woman-much younger, in fact, than I am now. And so, no matter how often I hear the story and read her words, it still has the power to bring abrupt and unsought tears.

What a gracious God, to work wonders with such frail and faulty creatures as us!

12 Pearls of Christmas-A Soggy,Jolly,Holly Christmas

A Soggy, Jolly, Holly Christmas
by Melody Carlson

One of my most memorable Christmases started out as a natural disaster. But isn’t that a bit how a pearl is formed? An oyster’s soft easy life is disrupted by the invasion of sand, but something good comes out of it. When I was eight, we experienced the worst flood in recorded Oregon history. It was only a few days before Christmas when our streets became shallow rivers and the governor proclaimed a state of emergency. My sister and I assumed the flood was simply our new water-world playground and didn’t understand the seriousness of washed out bridges and downed power lines and submerged homes. But when we realized this flood was about to nix our usual three-hour trek to our grandparents’ home near the coast, we were not happy.

Naturally, our mom, a single parent, protested the sensibility of holiday travel (most of Oregon’s rivers were involved in the flood). But Christmas at Grandma’s house was our favorite event of the year. And thanks to our persistence, Mom finally gave in. We piled into the car and headed out. Flood waters climbed higher the closer we got to the coast. And at one point the road behind us was closed and the one ahead was flooded and about to be closed as well. The state policeman told us we could cross “at our own risk.” We followed a Volkswagen Bug into the water-then we actually watched the bug floating away! Of course, there was nothing to do besides plow on through the water, which appeared to be nearly two feet deep! Fortunately we had an old heavy Chevy that did not float away, but the water seeped in and pooled on the floors.

Fortunately, we made it safely to the grandparents. But once we arrived, we learned there would be no Christmas tree because the road to the woods was closed. Then my grandpa picked up his ax and led us outside where he chopped down his prize holly tree planted in the parking strip. I stared in horror, thinking Grandma was going to have a fit. But then he explained the city had told him to remove the tree for traffic visibility. So we had a twelve foot holly tree for Christmas. It was a little prickly decorating it, but with its shiny green leaves and red berries, it was the most beautiful tree ever! So what started out as a disaster turned out to be a soggy, holly, jolly Christmas after all.

Daily Bible Reflections-It's not about us

My Daily Bible Reading

My Daily Bible Reading

Today’s Life Journal Reading is from:

John 9,10,11

Scripture

39 And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.”
40 Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, “Are we blind also?”
41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains. (John 9:39-41, New King James Version)

Observation:

I pulled up MHC and wanted to share what it says:

He reproves the Pharisees.

Christ came into the world to give sight to those who were spiritually blind. Also, that those who see might be made blind; that those who have a high conceit of their own wisdom, might be sealed up in ignorance.

The preaching of the cross was thought to be folly by such as by carnal wisdom knew not God. Nothing fortifies men’s corrupt hearts against the convictions of the word, more than the high opinion which others have of them; as if all that gained applause with men, must obtainacceptance with God.

Christ silenced them. But the sin of the self-conceited and self-confident remains; they reject the gospel of grace, therefore the guilt of their sin remains unpardoned, and the power of their sin remains unbroken.

Our pastor spoke a powerful sermon yesterday that I will share more after the holidays; Right now it’s a time of reflection on remembering that our Saviour and Lord was born a tiny babe and through that miracle, was a gift to all mankind, by our Heavenly Father for the sacrifice of Him, for our sins so that all will be saved through salvation.

However, this reading, is something that even as I noted to go back and share my reflections, is a reminder this holiday season, that in the midst of everything going wrong, and it does, that what is essentially important is remembering at heart what our Lord and Saviour has done for all of us and not just a select few.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the holidays and so focus on our family and friends, to forget that we have a bigger family to think of too and a Father who is above us all.

Application:

I pray and hope our Heavenly Father keeps my heart on straight and my heart always focused on Him and not on anyone else. It’s so easy to get caught up in personal glory that we lose focus and the truth is, we are small wheels in the bigger picture, it’s all about Him and nothing else but about Him.

It’s not about numbers; It’s not about who we know, it’s about “Do we know about Him, Abba, our Father in Heaven and have we called to Him and allow Him to be our Saviour and Lord”?

Men’s hearts are fickle and go everywhere which way and it’s like water that is poured out and with no direction, goes everywhere, but when we do what we do, for Him and only Him and give Him the credit and not focus on us, our lives, our hearts, our worships, are like a river that is directed in one direction, to Him.

Prayer:

Lord, Thank You for everday a powerful reminder of You, Heavenly Father and I pray and hope that You chastise me, give me strength and discernment and help us all remember, all is to and for Your Glory not us.

It’s a struggle for we all want to feel accepted and feel a part of something that is really smaller than what You are doing and I thank You for forgiving us like children who are slowly learning and maturing and pray as a loving parent, You continue to guide us, and give us discernment and lay on our hearts, the directions, YOU want us to take and we don’t supercede with what WE want.

In Your Name, I pray.

Amen

****Purpose of this post****

Gentle Readers, There are days that I will read a verse or passage and just feel pulled to share here, but there are days when I will read something and just feel, I need to spend the day, in personal contemplation of what is being convey and may just post via Twitter, what passages I have read that day and post nothing on here.

That is what bible reading is about; It’s not about having to write something down everyday; There maybe days when you are reading say, Numbers and it’s just lineages, but other days, you may find yourself dealing with a “powerhouse verse” of the moment and have to just go “WOW” and seek God in personal time and prayer to understand what He is sharing.

I will try to post daily, but particularly on weekends, if I’m sick or I’m just completely in awe of what I’m reading or maybe I am trying to understand what I am reading, I may not post here, I may just write in my Life Journal (hardcopy), because I will find myself having to seek His Word and/or the Commentary and just seek in prayer to understand what our Father in Heaven is seeking to reveal.

Either way.

Reading His Word, is about getting to know Him better and developing your Christian growth and maturity. Do what is right and good for you.

If you do use the Life Journal and participate in the daily readings, I would like to hear from you and your perspective on each day’s reading, when I do have a post up, or feel free to comment on a previous “Daily Bible Reading post” or send me a quick email.

Please feel free to join in the linky that I post below, so others too, who uses the Life Journal/or SOAP method to read the bible can participate.

Don’t feel obligate to have to blog about each passage to be read, but if anything, feel free to share those passages that have the most impact on you that day.

There maybe some days that you may read your daily reading and find nothing to jot down in your journal or on your blog and that’s okay, but there maybe other days, that you will find yourself inspire.

This is about you being encouraged to have a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father, and spending each day with Him, You and Him.

It is my prayer and hope that this will be an encouragement to establish a personal daily reading as well.

To find out more about using the S.O.A.P. method, here’s a link to an ehow article and here’s the link to the Life Journal to find out more what it is, and how you can use it for your own daily bible readings. If you don’t want to order the journal or if it’s not available through your local church, another method is simply, buy a journal or notebook or even blog about your life journal readings.

Disclaimer: I am not personally affiliated with the church that the link goes to, but merely share it as a resource of what the Life Journal is, how to order it.

12 Pearls of Christmas-Calling Elizabeth…HELP!

Calling Elizabeth … HELP!
by Tricia Goyer

Mary, the mother of Jesus is one of the most well-known women of all time. She was also a teen mom facing an unplanned pregnancy. This Christmas we will see evidence of Mary’s story all around us. And as you hear it through Christmas songs and Christmas shows think of three things:

1. Mary was signed up for a big task she wasn’t prepared for.
2. Mary no doubt faced criticism from people around her.
3. Mary found someone to turn to – a friend who could help Mary to succeed in her new role. It was Mary’s older cousin Elizabeth.

Elizabeth played an important part in Mary’s life. We know this because the book of Luke begins by telling us Elizabeth’s story first. Elizabeth was the wife of a priest. She was very old and had no children, but God blessed her in her old age by allowing her to get pregnant. After Elizabeth’s story comes Mary’s story … another surprise pregnancy. Can you imagine what a shock that was to everyone who knew both women? (Yes! I’m sure you can!)

The cool thing is that the angel Gabriel told Mary about Elizabeth’s surprise pregnancy. It’s as if he was saying, “Look, there’s someone in your same situation. Turn to her. She can help you.”

Mary did go to Elizabeth. In fact she lived with her older cousin for three months. Elizabeth was the first one who rejoiced over the child Mary held within her womb, and I imagine Elizabeth was there to encourage Mary as she coped with the idea of becoming a teen mom.

Like Mary, each of us should have people in our lives who we turn to for help, support and encouragement. Being a mom isn’t an easy thing, and facing an unplanned pregnancy is even tougher.

When I had my son Cory I was 17-years-old, and there were a group of women from my grandma’s church who supported me. They were the first ones who showed me that the child that was growing inside me was a gift. They gave me a baby shower, and they fought over holding my son after he was born.

As my son grew, there were other women I looked to … and most of the time they didn’t even know I was watching. One of them was Cheryl. Cheryl was patient with her children, she gave them big hugs, she laughed with them and played with them and I modeled myself after her. The thing about finding mentors is sometimes we can observe them without them even knowing. And if we’re really lucky they enjoy their role of giving us advice.

Later, when I had two kids, I met a friend named Cindy. She and I were the same age and we became quick friends. Cindy was a support to me because we traded babysitting, talked about parenting problems, and we encouraged each other. She was someone who was walking the same road as me, and her advice helped more times than I can count.

No matter who we are, or where we live, each of us can look around and see the people we have in our lives. Some may cheer us on, some may guide our parenting, and others may just be there to walk along side us. If the mother of Jesus needed someone to look to for support … shouldn’t we? Everyone needs someone to provide a little help and support.

12 Pearls of Christmas-The Answer

The Answer
by Susan May Warren

Whos, Here, we are Whos here, smaller than the eye can see. Whos here, we are Whos here, I’m a Who and so is she…

I’ve always wanted to live in a musical. When I was a kid, I loved Oklahoma, Sound of Music, West Side Story. I seriously thought that, if the moment was right, maybe the stars aligned, people would break out into song and dance.

I was sorta right. Because in my house, one needs to be able to talk in movie lines and song lyrics to effectively communicate. At any moment, someone might break out with a quip from the Princess Bride, or Finding Nemo. They might sing Tomorrow from Annie, or My Favorite Things like Julie Andrews.

But, most recently we’ve found ourselves speaking in “Suess”…

It’s suppertime, son, and the time is near To call far and wide the sneetches who hear Just the sound of their bellies, the whir of their gear The Gurgles and Burbles that give them great fear Tell them all, tell them loud, tell them clear Their hands they should wash, check their face in the mirror Because the food is now ready and it’s time to steer Close to the table, where they’ll find hot gribbles here.

Why, you ask? Because David and Sarah are performing in the community theater’s production of Suessical the Musical, a hilarious conglomeration of Dr. Suess’ fun work, from Horton hears a Who to Horton Hatches an Egg.

As the Christmas season draws close (and the songs from the play linger in my head), one line has stood out to me… “We are here, we are here!” You know the story – that part where, after everyone has called Horton names and they’re about ready to boil the speck that contains Who-ville, Horton calls out to the Whos to send up a cry to prove themselves as real. “We are here, we are here!”

It strikes me that sometimes we can feel like Whos…smaller than the eye can see. Tossed hither and yon by the wind, helpless and facing being boiled. Tired, perhaps, or alone. Wishing someone might find us and pay attention.

Someone has, and that’s the good news about Christmas. Because we don’t have to “make ourselves heard,” like the Whos. In fact, even before we realized we were headed for the cauldron, God intervened. God demonstrated his own love for us in this – while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom 5:8). That’s what Jesus is all about – he’s the answer to even the unspoken cry of our hearts, saying, “I am here, I am here.” Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

So as this season approaches with its whistles and bells I hope you hear the voice where the Mighty One dwells – down deep in your hearts, so nothing can shake the knowledge of his love, given all for your sake.

Merry Christmas from Susie May Warren

12 Pearls of Christmas-Christmas in a Barn

Christmas in a Barn
by Mary DeMuth

The Christmas of 2006 we were homeless. We didn’t have keys. Not to a car, not to a home. We’d flown halfway around the world, leaving behind a ministry we toiled over. Much, particularly in our hearts, lay in ruins.

Some friends had a camp, and on that camp stood a barn. In the corner of the barn was a tiny apartment, flanked by this caboose and hundreds of acres of Texas pasture. We’d never been there before, so we followed directions at night, making plenty of wrong turns.

When we found the place, we drove a borrowed car over the cattle guard toward what would be our home for a month. String lights illuminated a small porch, a window and a door in the corner of an aluminum-sided barn. We hefted large pieces of luggage to the apartment.

And when we opened the door, Love welcomed us.

The place, usually completely unfurnished in the winter, was decked out with just the right amount of beds, couches and tables. The pantry was full. We had dishes and garbage cans, and cups and forks and food. But even more, we had a Christmas tree. Friends had hijacked the place, decorating it for Christmas. Cookies preened on the table.

I will never, ever forget that Christmas. We had so little. We felt the painful burden of failure. But we were loved, so terribly and wonderfully loved.

Christmas felt right there, in a barn. We heard the nickering of horses, the meowing of kittens, the clop of hooves against the barn floor. Chickens and goats and cows served as a holy object lesson of the incarnation. Although we were warm and clothed, we understood more keenly the Savior’s homelessness, how He left the splendor of heaven for the sodden earth. We experienced barnyard life alongside him, without much to call our own except our Heavenly Father and our sweet family.

He was enough, that Christmas. And He will always will be.

The Perfect Tree-An Internet Cafe Devotion

Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?”
So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. (Luke 18:18-19, New King James Version)

It’s that time of the year, not the “most wonderful part” yet, but the preparations leading up to the “most wonderful time of the year”.

I know it’s going to happen, the one weekend will be spent looking for….the perfect tree.

The one that we are positive, is hiding in a lockbox, in the very back of the tree lot. We figure if we circle around the tree lot twenty times, they would figure we were on to them, relent, and bring out that perfect tree! THAT would make this the best time of the year, with everyone “ooing” and “aaahhing.”

The truth (sorry) is that there is no perfect tree.

Eventually the tree will start losing its pine needles, and the tree has to be taken down before it catches on fire and people think you purposely decided to have a bonfire in your dining room.

I don’t know how my husband does it.

I try to be a good sport and drag follow behind, but when I look at those trees, they all look the same. No matter how many angles I look, it’s a tree and it’s on sale. I shout, “woohoo! Let’s get it!” To my husband, something is always wrong, and we find ourselves walking back and forth. I feel like humming, “999 more trees in the lot.”

Good thing our Father in Heaven doesn’t do that to us.

He doesn’t look at us and say, “I just don’t know-what about this one? Hey got anything better?”

We’re all the same to Him. Sinners in need of saving. Sinners in need of His love.

This is an amazing time of the year, because its’ definitely not about us.

12 Pearls of Christmas-The Pearls We Pass Down

The Pearls We Pass Down

by Holley Gerth

Ten years ago my Grandma Frances went home to heaven in her sleep just before Christmas.

My Grandpa carefully handed me a brightly-wrapped box on Christmas morning and said, “This is her gift. Now I want you to have it.”

I opened the lid slowly and tears came to my eyes as I saw a lovely string of pearls.

My Mom gently helped me fasten them around my neck. As I ran my fingers over each one, I thought of my Grandmother and all she taught me through her life…

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:13

FAITH

At age twenty-nine, my Grandma contracted polio and learned she would never walk again. She had a husband, two little girls, and a future suddenly very different than she imagined.

A pastor came to visit her in the hospital. He said, “Frances, this can make you bitter or better.” She often told that story with a sparkle in her eyes as she said, “I chose better.” I learned through her example that faith is a choice and with God we can thrive through anything.

HOPE

My grandparents took a leap of faith and started the first Christian bookstore in their city with a small kiosk in the center of a mall. Over the next few decades that little kiosk grew into a large and successful store that touched countless lives.

Many of my favorite childhood memories are of curling up in the back room with a stack of books. My Grandma taught me hope is like a small seed and, watered with prayer, it can grow into a huge blessing for many.

LOVE

For fifty-six years my grandparents shared a life together. I adore these two pictures because one is taken when they were dating and the other just a few weeks before she died. The twinkle in their eyes is still the same-and that’s not easy in this world. They faced their share of challenges, like my Grandma’s disability, but always got through them together.

My Nana also loved her family deeply. When I went to college, she often wrote notes to me and signed each one, SCTH (Stay Close to Him). She showed me love is a commitment that begins with Christ and then overflows to everyone else in our lives.

I still miss my Grandma Frances, especially this time of year. Sometimes I pull out her string of pearls and hold them in my hands. Then I think about how we’re all creating our legacy as we live. And while the difficulties we face may seem hard to understand now, God can turn each one into beauty that blesses our family for generations.

How to Reach Your Full Potential for God-Book Review

How to Reach Your Full Potential for God

 Author: Dr. Charles Stanley

  • Author: Dr. Charles Stanley
  • Hardcover: 256 pages
  • Publisher: Thomas Nelson (December 29, 2009)
  • ISBN-10: 140020092X
  • Reading,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, I was impressed by the scriptural backing of the book.

Covering seven principles that often reflect the daily concerns that as Christians, people find themselves struggling or looking how to deal with, Dr. Charles Stanley, provides biblical backed solutions and examples from the Bible of how to seek God’s Word, to reach, our individual potential, to serve and worship our Heavenly Father at our best.

What ,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, doesn’t do, is be an everyday self help book, but instead emphasize how our Heavenly Father can help you.

Backing suggestions with scripture, ,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, indeeds reaching it’s full potential, and is a wonderful suggestion for those who are seeking to develop a deeper and more active relationship with our Heavenly Father and a book, that could easily be recommend, not as “the source”, but as a tool for helping new to “young” Christians seeking to have a more substantial relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Dr. Stanley, constantly reemphasizes that,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, does not take the place of the ultimate source of guidance, the Bible, but does help provide useful references that anyone could find value in.

On page 16, Dr. Stanley shares, “The Christian life was never intended to be a matter of book learning or hard knowledge. God wants us to live out the life He created and intends for us to live”.

There are some parts of the book that are encouraging and others that for some, may feel convicting due to its bluntness and telling the reader what they need to hear, not what they want to hear, and it lives up to what Dr. Stanley says that,”Anytime we turn fromthe Fatehr’s way to our way, we grieve Him. Anytime we choose what we want over what God wants for us, we stifle the Holy Spirit’s ability to help us” (pg.38)

However the truth is, reading this book, there was so many quotable quotes, examples and scripture that could be shared that it really helps open doors that God seeks to open.

If you are truly inspired to live a more fruitful and deeper relationship with our Heavenly Father, I recommend,“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,.

No one is perfect, but no one is so imperfect that they don’t have the potential to be used for and in a way that will glorify our Heavenly Father.

“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, is a great reminder that it’s not about changing or altering who God has made us to be, but about a relationship that aims at maturing and making us better who we are and that is a good thing.

“How to Reach Your Full Potential for God”,, is just an overall encouraging book for either general reading, or discovering how to take your relationship with our Heavenly Father to another level and a recommend read to all.

This was a 7 part series on “Bible 101″ that I had originally written when my blog was hosted on blogspot.com.

In the process of moving it over here, with prayers that this could be a blessing and encouragement to those who feel daunted about reading their bible and in light of reading “Becoming More than a Bible Study Girl”, I wanted to re-introduce these posts to you, Gentle Readers.

Ezekiel 37:14-And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the Lord have spoken [it], and performed [it], saith the Lord.

1 corinthians 2:9-10-9. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10. But God hath revealed [them] unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

Ever try to put things together without reading the instruction manual? Not easy is it?

    Same goes with knowing God.

From “A Modern Girl’s Guide to Bible Study,” is a VERY telling quote,
“Many believers know God only as He is known by their teachers. Various passages mean this or that based on the interpretations we’ve heard or read somewhere.”

We don’t need to have a college degree to understand the bible. Nor do we need to read a book about the bible to know God.

If you really want to start studying the Bible and learn God’s word, the reality is that there is no excuses then the excuses we make to ourselves. We are the only hinderance that keeps ourselves knowing God’s word.

People understand God’s word is because they turn to the only person who can help them. God. They allow the Holy Spirit to come into their lives and plant that passion and desire to learn and we don’t get it just because we are Christians.

We get it because we pray and allow the Holy Spirit in our lives.

When we don’t open the door…no amount of “I wish, I want” is going to make it happen.

We become our own worse enemies.

    To study God’s word…it takes 3.
    1. The Word
    2. You
    3. The Holy Spirit

God doesn’t abandon us and says…”Good luck” He says…”You can.”

Our Heavenly Father knows that we are unable to adequately learn His words on our own but we have to let our pride down and admit we can’t do it on our own and ask and allow the Holy Spirit in our life to let us learn God’s word. Until then…we are stuck on a continual cycle of trying to read His word and stopping. Trying and stopping. Trying and stopping.

Think about it….”Isn’t it true that we can hear all about the Bible, listen to godly counsel about reading it, and watch other people fall in love with it, but when it’s time to encounter the Word by ourselves, we look around in shock, wondering who thought we were equipped to do that? When it comes to studying the Bible, being a hearer is much easier than being a doer. The reality of being alone with God’s Word-Not in mechanical reading but for significance-sometimes freaks us out Source: A Modern’s Girl’s Guide to Bible Study.”

Have good faith. God has someone to help us out.

John 14:26 (KJV)-But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

God wants to be our tutor. We just have to stop making excuses why we can’t and just do. Ezra did it and didn’t have the luxaries that we have, so why can’t we?

2 Peter 1:21 (NAS)-for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

We won’t be able to start learning God’s word when we find ways to avoid simply asking God to let the Holy Spirit in our lives and allow the Helper, the Holy Spirit to help us learn and read God’s word with discernment and understanding.

We can’t do it ourselves or we are going to fail.

When we allow the Holy Spirit in, then you can have the same thing you find in other people who have a passion and love and knowledge of God’s word.

When you think about it, the enemy doesn’t want you to read God’s word. He will find ways to make you think you don’t have time, way or ability to read God’s word. So long as you keep the door close on the Holy Spirit, and the door open for the enemy, it’s easy to fill like understanding God’s word is above you.

    Got a bible? Check

    Got you? Check

Have you prayed to God for the Holy Spirit to help you read God’s word and to understand His word? Have you asked at all?

Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)-The heart [is] deceitful above all [things], and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Whether we like it or not..unless we pray to God for the Holy Spirit to help us learn God’s word…we can’t do it.

If you really, in your heart want to know God….make time. Ask God for the Holy Spirit to come into your heart and help you.

So don’t be shy if you can’t read God’s word by yourself. Don’t look longing at those who can. God’s word is for you. It really is. You can read it.

Take a deep breath and before you even open that bible, ask the Holy Spirit for help.Ask specifically for daily wisdom. Pray for godly discernment. He has always been your Companion, but commit to being His.
