Enjoy nature studies…just not snakes

What is the statistical chance of seeing venomous snakes not once, not twice, but three times in, maybe a month, a month and a half.

We think there either must be a nest or as a result of the dry season this summer, the snakes are moving out of their natural habitats, but yes, not once, not twice, but make it three times that we’ve seen snakes and unfortunately, all of them venomous.

The first two were water moccassins, which are not only venomous, but are very aggressive reptiles (the first one we saw was in the backyard and it hissed at hubby) and the second time, we were on our way to church that morning and I had opened up the garage door.

Apparently the water moccassin was sunning by the door and the garage door was barely going up, when it came in and was probrably…I’m guessing 3 1/2 to 4 feet from us and yes, that was the fastest that I think, I’ve ever unlocked the garage door and hubby and I made it back in.

The worse part about the experience was, well, several, things.

First part, I didn’t notice him, her, it, until I was to the driver’s side mirror and I noticed something slithering, not moving, slithering, and I screamed and backed up….fast and hubby at first thought it was a “silly scream” till he noticed the snake coming our way….fast.

The second part, normally, when I’ve seen a snake like that, it was behind a glass window that was thick…very thick and nope, didn’t feel the thrill of nature in action that morning.

Finally, hubby doesn’t complain about taking the garbage out anymore instead of me.

Come to think of it…that last reason isn’t the worse thing after all.

What about our third experience?

Well..that happened yesterday morning.

I headed to the mailbox to mail a letter and on the way back, another slithering reptile crossed the path leading up the front door.

This time it wasn’t a water moccasin.

It was a copperhead.

Joy.

Joy of Nature?

No.

Joy that I learned I can run really fast in flip-flops into the house.

So yes, I do enjoy the idea of nature studies…just as long as it doesn’t involve snakes; Particularly the venomous kind or the aggressive kind like the water moccasin.

Sigh.
