Trimming the ends

“He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that is will be even more fruitful.”  -John 15:2 (NIV)

Gardening is really not my strongest point.

I have cactus that passed away, on my watch,to where-ever plants ,under my care ,pass away and I wonder, when I go to Heaven one day, if gardening might be one of those things that our Heavenly Father may decide is my weakest point and direct everyone there to keep me away from?

Have you ever felt like anything you’ve touched seem to falter under your watch?

Friendships, projects, plants?

Have you thought that maybe it’s not so much as they are faltering under your care, but that our Heavenly Father, in His infinite wisdom, saw something that you have yet to know or has yet come to pass, and is constantly pushing you on to something bigger and better that He needs you at, or maybe just sees something that maybe hindering your growth in and through Christ?

Okay…that doesn’t explain the plants part.

Maybe it’s just saving grace that He wants to protect the plants so there’s not really a good go around on that one.

That’s okay though. You may not be the greatest gardener out in the green garden, but rather you know it or not, you are the greatest gardener in God’s world and He needs you to serve Him as He plants seeds here and there.

However, being the Master Gardener that He is, He can quickly spot the areas in our lives that.just.not.are.right.for.us and as hard as it is for us to lose friendships that seem to no longer bear fruit for us, to no longer feel like you are growing in that church that was really great a year ago, or He doesn’t need you working at that job anymore and it’s just reached that point that it doesn’t bear fruit for you that in turn bear testimony to Him.

There are some things he can’t leave to us. He’s the professional. We’re not. Which is why:WE need HIM.

Okay.

Easier said then done.

I have had quite a few dead or dying branches in my life and there were quite a few that I didn’t want to let go or still don’t want to let go of, but God had other plans for me.

Good thing He doesn’t ask for my opinion of what I usually think on some things because I already know I’m imperfect to begin with and that’s why I have needed Him before, need Him now and always will need Him no matter where or what I am.

If He depended on what I had to thought, my whole branches would be dead or dying; However God is bigger and better than that and He knows I’m human, I make mistakes, I excel at making mistakes that I sometimes wonder if that was what I’m here for, to just make mistakes all the time.

Alright; That’s not the case, or at least I hope so, but I know that there are a lot of times when I feel down and about that I have to remember….I may make mistakes, infrequently or if you ask some people, frequently, but we serve a perfect Father.

There are no mistakes in His design and there never will be a mistake in His design. It’s easy to try and tell ourselves that but we then have to remember, who made the first choice to make the mistake, Him or us?

We usually do and God, God is so perfect in that He swoops right in (though maybe not that dramatically) and turns what may seem like a bad situation and uses it for HIS good.

How many times when we have that “uh-oh” moment and find ourselves later turning to Him, or because of Him, using that moment to share as testimony to someone else, who in turn, turns to Him.

Is that a mistake?

Nope.

That’s called God’s perfection.

So what about all those dead branches again?

Who among us has a tree that is flourishing, green and just plush with leaves but there are dead branches hanging about obscurring the view of the tree or maybe present a hazard to ourselves or to others, if not now, then definetely later?

Some of us do it ourselves but to really get the job done right and safely, we leave it to the professionals. Same with God. We can’t do this ourselves, we need Him though sometimes we may be to shy or prideful to say so, ultimately, He is the ONLY one who can save us.

Not us.

No one outside of us.

No one in the world.

Only Him.

During the hurricane, one thing that was commonplace around here, was people not only preparing their homes but pruning their trees of potential hazards or if they had time, cutting down old trees that they knew could fall and either damage their property or potentially hurt someone.

That’s what God does with our lives….

If there is something there that is going to keep us from growing, keep us from seeing Him, will be a hazard to us or to others or can be use, like dead branches are use to build a fire, to lead someone to Christ, HE, is going to personal go, “looking a shabby there “fill in your name” today, let me give you a “trim”.

And trimming He does, till there is nothing that will hinder our growth in and through Christ.

Good thing God doesn’t leave that up to me. That’s like me skipping the hairdresser and trying to cut my own hair. I can’t cut straight so imagine if I try to cut my own hair. Uhm…yep.

If you haven’t had a chance to really know Him or would like to have a personal relationship with Him, I invite you to look Him up. He is in the best book in the world. that is more informative than the local yellow pages. Take a look and find out for yourself.

Want to know about the best thing about this professional?

He is on call 24/7 and the price has already been paid. All you have to do is accept, believe and confess.

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

1 Corinthians 3:11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

John 3:16-18, 36 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. [18] Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son…. [36] Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.

Acts 16:30-31, KJV …Sirs, what must I do to be saved? [31] And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

No joke that homeschooling brings out many creative sides that one never realizes they have till they are creating a project, putting together a lesson plan or finding new uses around the home.

Top it off…sometimes we can’t replace a much needed item or just need a way to make things last for as long and as frugal as possible.

Many uses of WD-40

In this case, the dry erase board plays a huge part in conveying ideas, making a point or just scribbling but eventually we find ourselves in situations where the board we are using, isn’t holding up or erasing like we wish it would.

Out of curiousity and checking online we soon discovered that a regular household product that was just as usual for getting squeaks out of the door hinge, with a spray, gives a dry erase board, it’s original usefulness again.

So if you too, find yourself in a situation where, though you may have scrubbed the marks off, the dry erase board won’t retain it’s original abilty to wipe off as easily as the markers can mark on, clean off the board with an abrasive cleaner or SOS pad, then spray on the good ol WD-40 and it’s as good as new.

Exploring Homeschooling-Reflection of the past month

I never expected homeschooling to change my life as much it has, but it’s something that I am glad that my family and I have made the decision to do.

The first month had its challenge  and it’s been a challenge in many ways, but even though we are toward the end of October, it’s not to say that we haven’t worked out the kinks in the schedule or find completely our groove, but we are getting there.

It did have it’s con’s in that particularly the first month and no doubt as many of you can tell, it took really making priority over what was more important and what wasn’t.

Although I couldn’t spend as much time blogging as I normally have, it’s been worth it, the time I have spent, using nights to research lesson ideas, methods, curriculum and just preparing for the week’s studies ahead.

In the process, it’s been a blessing to personally experience the awareness of a new ability and to know that as a parent, we are able to fully participate in the development of a child’s learning, knowledge and curiousity.

For me, the benefits hasn’t been the time we have spent during school time, but the times I see, “after school” when the kids are playing together or with other kids and the inter-change of ideas and knowledge. In a lot of ways, the kids are teaching other kids, things that they either haven’t learned yet in school or at least this year, or might not be taught in school.

“The experience of homeschooling is as much about adults uncovering the shimmering, infinite quality of learning itself as it is about kids absorbing knowledge.” -Eileen Fisher, Editor, EdPress Online

My husband had a chance to stay home and really see first hand, what a “normal” day was like and afterward, express surprise at how excited the kids were learning and laugh at how disappointment they were, that they couldn’t just keep running with a particular lesson or thought…

He enjoyed participating in our science experiment regarding the “Water Cycle” where the kids both learn about liquid, solid, gas and replicate the transition of solid to liquid when we discover the fastest methods to make water melt (I think the dogs enjoy this the most when they grab a quick, cold drink from one of our experiments.

Later, my husband volunteered to do Friday’s Math facts lesson and enjoyed having both of the kids involved and using shapes to learn how to skip count by 2. I had a hard time not laughing when the oldest correct, Daddy, for miscounting.

It’s been a big help joining not only local homeschooling groups and seeking out the mentorship and just peer support of other homeschooling moms, but I’ve learned a lot connecting with other moms through “The Homeschooling Lounge“, as well just really taking the time to ask questions and challenging myself to not only have fun but re-look at how we were approaching homeschooling.

In addition, we have several resources that we’ve used not as a definitive guide but just as a supplemental guide. Some of those resources have been:

  • Starfall- A great online phonics program to help teach kids phonics and their alphabet. I had been referred to this site earlier on in my research into homeschooling by Sister Christine of “Atomik Kitten”. She recommended this site as a great way to help lay the foundation to help kids reading.

In addition, several books we have in our library that has helped us with developing curriculums and helping us determine what direction to go has been:

Home Learning : Year by Year by Rebecca Rupp

I really enjoy this book because it presents a structured plan for those who are use or looking for more structured in their homeschooling and a great source for texts to use, workbooks, websites and more. Written by Rebecca Rupp, it provides a guidelines of standards of what is usually expected for each grade level and covers from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

What Your Kindergarten Needs to Know by Ed Hirsch

This is actually a pretty neat book. It covers: math, art, history, language arts, science, and technology, about 80 pages and even I enjoy reading it. There is a great section with nothing but just rhymes in there that is just fun, sitting and reading with the kids, and at night, we often get the book just to read the many classic stories that are in it for bedtime stories or to laugh as we read the fun rhymes. The pages covering the arts are gorgeous and a great way to introduce the kindergarten child to beautiful colors and the start of learning about the beauty of the fine artists that are out there.

McGuffey’s Eclectic Primer

A great back to the very basics primer, I was satisfied with how it really works not only on Dolch Words but just basic, good old fashion primer. Looking for something very simple but easy to get kids started reading, I highly suggest using this.

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Siegfried Engelmann

We start each day, working for 20 minutes on each lesson, in addition to following up with working on phonics afterward either on Starfall.com or using Paper Magic Phonics Flashcards.

With the “Teach Your Child to Read” there are also  handwriting/manuscript lessons that are associated with this. As for the use of the Phonics Flashcards, the benefits of this as well as using it, in conjunction with Starfall.com is that both the kids are getting the benefits and I’m basically teaching both at the same time. It’s fun and heartwarming to see both of them working together and the youngest benefit from listening and participating with the older kids in the learning process.

For Math, we use many workbooks that are made by Schoolzone and can easily be bought from stores such as Wal-mart, Target, Costco etc.

Offering the same benefits as curriculum based, parents can use this as a cost effective way to supplement kids learning.

Colorful and fun, the kids have really enjoyed using the workbooks, in addition to other worksheets and supplements that we have printed out from the many free worksheet sites available online to learn their basic math and counting skills.

We are also in the process of ordering Abeka Primary Bible to begin bible lessons and I’m also looking into creating lapbooks to not only add to the learning, but give the kids more creative outlets to supplement their learning experience.

I was amazed and just enjoying just the diversity that is available in homeschooling and the realization and freedom in that there is no one set way when it comes to homeschooling.

For science and social studies, there are many sites out there such as lessonplans.com, unit studies online and through homeschooling groups, if you’re more comfortable with a more structured environement, textbooks and prepackaged curriculums; the possibilities are endless.

For me, it’s been a joy to still be able to incorporate our Heavenly Father in our daily learnings and be able to let the kids still have their innocence and joy that in these days, seem to last so short and too quickly for many.

I guess you can say in a way, we have a more structured educational curriculum but as we become more comfortable and confident in homeschooling, I’ve been looking and considering other methods that are out there…With that in mind, I’ve also made sure to pay close attention to the learning styles of the kids and making sure that whatever is use, would be good for them and not just for me, so that in the end, THEY, would not only get the most benefit but the most enrichment and encouragement from being homeschooled.

If you are a homeschooling mom, I would love to hear more from you, what type of homeschooling method are you using and what is your favorite part of homeschooling?

“John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light” (John 5:35).

There are people that you just know has Christ living in and through them. There are people who call themselves Christians and yet when one is around them, rather than feeling our Father’s love and life through and in them, instead we feel rejection and hurt.

In a daily devotion, I read,

A diamond is designed to reflect the light to reveal its true value. The cut of a diamond determines its brilliance. There is no single measurement of a diamond that defines its cut, but rather a collection of measurements and observations that determine the relationship between a diamond’s light performance, dimensions and finish.

Jesus came to bring the light of His love and grace to each of us. However, we are born into a world dulled by the sin created by Adam and Eve that makes our lives dark until we meet Jesus. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” (Rom 3:23-24).”

It’s silly to use as an example, but think of an engagement ring and how everyone in the room seems suddenly drawn to the newly engaged girl’s display of her promise to be married. The oooo’s and the aaaah’s but more than anything, it’s hard not to get caught up in the joy and excitement of the newly engaged and the soon to be married.

As Christians, do we show that ourselves daily in our lives to everyone we meet and I mean truly and honestly and not when we just feel like the spotlight is upon us.

It’s hard to do so, to be honest, if we have had a bad day, but it’s food for thought…when people cross our paths, what do we want them to remember not so much us by, but our Heavenly Father by?

That despite the storms that may rumble in our lives, do we want them to see us as sour faced testament to our Heavenly Father that should they see us in any other day, may instead of embracing us…turn from us and our Heavenly Father, or as human beings who knowing they are not perfect, gave their life and trust to our Heavenly Father and allowed Him to lead us and to guide us how to act and react.

We are the diamonds that reflect our Heavenly Father and how do we allow Him to live in and through us so what is reflected is Him and not us or our moods that change.

Book Review-Cast of Characters

Cast of Characters: Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God

ISBN: 979-0-8499-2124-7
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Type: Hardcover
Release Date: 2008
Pages:222

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me….
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

T’was Grace that taught…
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear…
the hour I first believed.[1. "Amazing Grace" lyrics by John Newton]

Ever felt like you weren’t measuring up? Maybe for a split second, you had a “Why me” moment?  What if you found out that there were others who thought they were the last people on Earth, that God would want, only to find themselves being used by God in major ways?

As I read “Cast of Characters”, the book reminded me of the song, “Amazing Grace” that no one is every beyond God’s mercy and grace. The tears begin to flow as I read about imperfect people, whom through them and their lives bear testament of a perfect Father.

“Cast of Characters” by Max Lucado is a touching and revealing look that God doesn’t expect us to be perfect. He loves us for us, scars, tattoos, imperfections, and maybe we don’t have a perfect past, but neither did the many people God used to bear testament to His mercy and Love.

The book is an encouragement to all of us who feel we may have fallen short in this world or in God’s eyes, and a much needed reminder that He does loves us, for us, and He does and can use us no matter what we may look like, or have in our past.

Max Lucado’s, “Cast of Characters”, is a great read particularly if you find yourself wondering, why would God want to get to know you or maybe you’ve put off taking time with God because you think that He can’t or won’t use you. Guess again, He can and He does.

No one is too little or too big for our Heavenly Father.

No matter what or where or who you are in life, “Cast of Characters” is a reminder of what a loving, Heavenly Father we have who is forever seeking us.

I John 4:17-18:In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. 18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

What was your defining moment that you knew you were firmly in the grip of Our Heavenly Father and was more than just a “Christan” but completely His child?

For me, it had to be the moment when I ran out of excuses why I didn’t need God.

It was the moment that I found myself having to come face to face with the reality of who He was and who I wasn’t without Him and that HE loved me…He loved me even though I felt like I didn’t deserve to be loved by Him, HE loved me and called to me to repent of my sin and to accept Him as my Lord and Saviour and to accept the love and forgiveness He yearned to share with me, with you, with all of us.

There are many defining moments in people lives, be it when they are life long Christians only to find that one single second when they truly understand what having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is about and there are those moments as a sinner when they find they can no longer run away from the over powering love of our Heavenly Father and finally come face to face with what He truly wants with each of us.

What was your defining moment? What cause you to just stop and realize…YOU are a child of God…and not just a Christian at face value or to other people, but that no matter what would happen, or what people could say, YOU belong to Him.

Genesis 31:49; Image Copyright:
Genesis 31:49; Image Copyright: Inspire21.com

Since the hurricane and with the full swing of homeschooling, most of my time has been taken up with schooling and then catching up with non-school errands.

As time went on and I actually realized the need to take the time to re-organize my dayplanner to suit the change in life, it also meant catching up on email and just catching up with dear friends and even family that I had lost touched with in the past months.

The absence and just working to better manage my time, made me reflect so much on our Heavenly Father and how easy it is ourselves to get lost in spending time with Him.

I realize that I missed just blogging like I did, and more than anything, I missed the time I spent with Him and reading His word and realized that as busy as I was with homeschooling and taking care of every day life, that I was neglecting as well, my spiritual life with our Heavenly Father.

We are all entering that time of year where the holidays are slowly creeping around the corner and the rush to prepare for the holidays will begin, but in the process, it is a time we need to make extra sure that just as much as we go over our holiday lists and begin to get into that holiday mode, that we don’t forget to take the time to spend with our Father too and not forget Him.

This is a fitting verse I feel that when we are absent, just as we pray and hope we are not lost in the thoughts of others, that we don’t get lost in the thoughts of our Heavenly Father.

Life does happen where we get so busy and caught up we forget, accidently or not and it’s with prayer and hopes that we remember that we need to make time just as our Heavenly Father makes time and nothing is too big or too small for Him.

Lord, I pray that in our daily lives, in no matter what the circumstances are, that we don’t forget You, Heavenly Father. I pray for Your strength and Your love and just help us do what we can not do ourselves, but what we need YOU to do, which is to make time in our lives and not get so caught up that we get needlessly swept away.
