Homeschooling and Hurricanes

Is it over yet?

Teaching kids about hurricanes
Teaching kids about hurricanes

This year has definetely been a busy year for hurricanes.

Just when we thought we were done with Gustov, here came not one, not two, but three systems.

Praise God that Hanna was not a terrible storm and that Gustov didn’t do as much damage as feared but now…here comes Hurricane Ike and out there, still Josephine!

As we started homeschooling, one of the subjects we wanted to introduce the kids to was science and naturally, the first question, I had was, how to get started. Guess, the weather had an answer there.

We figure that this would be a great way to not only teach about the subject of weather ,but for many kids, particularly those who are young or whose never experienced hurricanes, we felt that homeschooling was a great enviroment to help them understand in the case of an evacuation or just hunkering down, what was going on.

What I love about homeschooling (and the kids probrably don’t) was that even though school would have to be cancelled, every opportunity is a learning moment.

There are no time barriers or well..any barriers. Everything is a learning experienced. The question was, how to do so in a way that was appropiate for their age and also be of benefit. I

If you are a homeschooling mom and either you happen to be in an area vulnerable to hurricanes or would like to incorporate learning about hurricanes into your child’s homestudy, here are some great links that I found.

Lori of “All You Have to Give” shared a really great link:fema.gov/kids/herman/beach.htm

Weather Whiz Kids-There are plenty of lesson plans for 4th grade and up

Lesson Page on Hurricanes (4-6th grade)

Owlie talks about Hurricanes-NOAA has a downloadable coloring book/kids book on hurricanes that is in pdf form (Highly recommend for 5th grade and up, very informative but too much for younger kids)

Coloring book with very basic info for young kids about Hurricanes (PDF file)-This is excellent for pre-k to 3rd grade and we are using this for our kindergarten science lesson)

Here are more sites to pick from:

  1. 42explore.com/hurricane.htm (Great list of lesson plans about hurricane or just about weather)
  2. weathereye.kgan.com/cadet/lessons.html (For younger kids to learn about weather)
  3. Hurricane Theme page: cln.org/themes/hurricanes.html

Hurricanes can be just as scary for kids and if you are homeschooling, this is a great way to talk with them about what is going on.

Praying this can be of help and to all of you that keep an eye on the Gulf during Hurricane Season, may Our Heavenly Father wrap His arms around you in comfort and strength and have faith in Him that He will see you through this.

Isaiah 43:2
2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

?When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.
