Seeking His Word

Written by: Twinkle Mom

in Bible, General Musings

Okay….I shouldn’t be writing blogs late at night, but the kids are sleeping, the dogs are currently competing in synchronize sleeping and apparently winning and hubby is doing hubby things (translation: playing an online game), so I had some free time.

That and it gives me an excuse to snack on some oreos. I know. I know. Unfortunately we are out of m&m’s at the moment and rather than panic, I chose to substitute something “healthier”-the oreos.

I wish I could say that, the oreos, served the cxraving, but it didn’t because what I really wanted more than anything wasn’t a subsitute but m&m’s.

Have you ever just get a hunger like that? A craving for something and nothing seems to be able to fill that hunger, that need.

Oh, you can try substitutes, but it just never seems to be enough and no matter what, that hunger just won’t go away until you give in to it and feed it?

I’ve been like that recently.

I’ve just craved God’s word and not just in the casual reading. Yes, I’m reading through the Bible, but I needed and wanted more than just fill my daily quota of God’s word.

Just reading books about the bible was okay, but never can scratch the surface and as I find myself reading God’s word, I found myself struggling in some ways to really grasp the full picture of His word.

I wanted to know more about His word. The background, how to really study effectively God’s word and just what God’s desire was for me.

1Peter 2:2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,

Seeking dictionaries, commentaries, concordance, I realize that more than anything I needed to keep challenging myself and pushing myself to keep finding ways to stay on fire for and with God and with His word.

I felt so spiritually weak and immature and just not really measuring up in a way that I felt like I am truly fit to be a servant to God and I just felt like a broken vessel that could not serve our Father like I felt I should.

Ephesians 3:19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Unfortunately there were no local courses or classes that really were within a range or flexibility (translation: cheap) that I could seek to know God’s word and this is something that I could not find at church, however recently I was blessed to find by way of careful discernment a correspondence class that was graded, and provided a strong biblical foundation and way to studying the bible and praise God, it’s been fun.

Okay.

I’ve only taken one class so far, but like a fresh glass of milk that with the first taste, just goes down filling, I can’t wait to take the next lesson.

If you’ve read, my post “Shared BIble“, I shared with you, the dear bible that was given to me as a gift.

Bible
2Tmothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work

The best thing about it, in addition to that it is God’s word, was that it is the best bible, I have ever received because it wasn’t the one I wanted and God couldn’t have deliver it to me, any other better way.

Yes, that’s right.

I had my heart set on another one and God in His divine providence, had my husband give me another and I wouldn’t trade that bible for all the money in the world because of the reminder it is to me of our Heavenly Father and the love and reminder of who and what He is through the guidance and love of my husband.

The best mistake he ever made and I love him for it.

On the cover, are the words, “Faith”.

A reminder to me to have faith as hard as it may feel, but always necessary and a sign of trust to our Heavenly Father.

It is a reminder to have faith in my husband, in my family and in the blessings of our Heavenly Father.

It is a reminder that I’m not perfect.

I’m weak.

I’m immature and I can’t do it, but God can.

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ “

Taking this course is a blessing, because it challenges me to keep studying the bible in fresh new ways, and keeping that fire for our Heavenly Father going.

There are several other distance learning courses that are available and I”m still mulling over which one I will take next, but I DO know that right now…I’m enjoying learning how to study God’s word.

I don’t think it ever gets too old to learn how to read His word, to have it sink in and how to apply His word to our lives.

If you haven’t taken the time to read God’s word yourself, Gentle Friend, I encourage you to.

There are so many great books that are out there to help you. One particular favorite of mine is “The Modern Girl’s Guide to Bible Study”.

Very fun. Down to earth and geared for busy mom (and women) like you and I, it’s one of many great books out there to help you get motivated, encouraged and on the track to studying and really getting into the meat and potatoes of God’s word.

So Gentle Friend, as I find ways to keep exploring and reading God’s word, what ways and methods can you seek for yourself and in your time with God?

Ezra 7:10. Neither Ezra nor Israel could know enough of God’s will without going to the scriptures.

Psalm 1:1,2; 19:7; 119:34 105. David, though inspired, loved and read the scriptures of the law.

1 Timothy 4:13; 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:14 17. Paul constantly points Timothy to the scriptures for his wisdom and power to teach the church. He says the scriptures are the word of God.

Great post, Twinkle Mom! I know what you mean about the craving. My cravings are similar - chocolate and the Bible. What more could a girl ask for? Seriously, I’m so glad you are enjoying delving into His Word. It’s something that’s been such a passion of mine for over a year now that I love hearing about other people who share it. I had never read through God’s Word before, and last year on my birthday, I made it my goal to do so. I’m now on my 3rd go around. Who thought the Old Testament could be so exciting? As for seeking that time with God, I find that for me, early morning works best. The nest is empty save the husband and dog and they sleep until the last possible moment. That’s my precious time alone with him. This morning I read Zephaniah. Of course Zephaniah 3:17 is my verse of the day! “The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”

What a precious image and truth!

Thank you for this post, Twinkle! At first it made me hungry for one of my Hundred Calorie packs of Oreos in the pantry. Then I was convicted by your hunger for God’s Word.

My TT post is along the same line.

Have a blessed weekend.

@Marsha: LOL…I didn’t mean to inadvertently start craving for oreos or M&M’s, lol, but praise God if it does start a craving for God’s word!

No calories to His word.

Very filling and it’s great for one’s life!

Praise God He loved us so much to give us His word in written form.

I have been sick, which you know, and barely keeping my eyes open - this has led to not much reading for me. As you know I have been reading daily. I feel so incomplete. I am back in the game today though!

((hugs))

wonderful post, as always ;)

Good Morning. I would love to know more about online course that you found. I’ve been seeking new ways to study God’s Word, too, and just can’t find what I’m seeking.

Happy Friday!

I get that too, both physically and spiritually, about how nothing will fill that craving! Lately I’ve been studying more in depth in my Bible than just my daily read, like you mentioned. I really like even taking one verse and dissecting it by looking up its Hebrew or Greek meanings to really grasp all that the verse says. I’ve also enjoyed reading through some books lately that guide me in a particular study. Currently I’m studying on the topic of the mind and our thoughts.

It is great to learn and especially the Word of God! I can’t get enough!! :)
