Sunday Praise and Worship-Prayer

To find out more on how to participate in Sunday Praise and Worship, come here.

The trouble with nearly everybody who prays is that he says “Amen” and runs away before God has a chance to reply. Listening to God is far more important than giving Him your ideas.-Frank Laubach

One day, there was a group of people who asked if there were any prayer requests and as such times arose, many volunteer personal concerns and needs. Out of this though, one of the members piped up and the prayer offered was asking for a new job for their spouse, more money from the job, a nanny, more customers and oh yes, please pray for everyone else, but it would be great if the new job was in “x” amount of digits and by the way, pray this was for a blessing and not just personal want..

What was interesting wasn’t so much the prayer itself, but the reaction to everyone around to the prayer.

Among the list of those who were lost, hurt or ill, and out of all this was this prayer that had a few shift uncomfortable in their seats and a few strained smiles.

Why do we pray?

Beginners, praying is our direct connection to our Heavenly Father, remember, we are advised to ask for anything and everything in prayer, however, when we pray to our Heavenly Father, it’s also a reminder not of us, or the trappings of the world, but rather to keep the focus on Him, not us.

I happen across this wonderful quote by C.S.Lewis that was written in,”Reflections on the Psalms”:

“I had never noticed” he writes “that all enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise unless (sometimes even if) shyness or the fear of boring others i deliberately brought in to check it. The world rings with praise – lovers praising their mistresses, readers their favourite poet, walkers praising the countryside, players praising their favourite game – praise of weather, wines, dishes, actors, motors, horses, colleges countries, historical figures, children, flowers, mountains, rare stamps, rare beetles, sometimes even politicians or scholars.

I has not noticed how the humblest and most capacious minds praised most… I had not noticed, either, that just as persons spontaneously praise what they value, so they spontaneously urge us to join them in praising it: ‘Isn’t she lovely?! Wasn’t it glorious?!! Don’t you think that’s magnificent?!!

The Psalmists, in telling everyone to praise God, are doing what we all do when we speak of what we care about!”

This is such a vivid reminder of how Jesus Christ laid the model for us to pray in the Lord’s Prayer.
For beginners, when we pray to Our Heavenly Father, we are to approach Him as we would anyone in casual conversation, after all that’s the blessing of our Father. He yearns to have a personal relationship with us all.

“But when you pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking,” Matthew 6:7

But more than anything, prayer isn’t about trying to out beat the other. Prayer isn’t a competition. It’s a plea, a praise, and a worship to our Heavenly Father. There are no gold medals of who has the best prayer. (Okay, I couldn’t help throwing that in…watching WAY too much Olympics).

Prayer is both a private and personal act. It’s about humbling oneself and respect to our Heavenly Father. It’s not asking for the car keys, but asking Him to help us with our needs…not our wants. God isn’t a wish maker.

Matthew 6:5-13
And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

There is no denying that Our Heavenly Father knows our needs before we even speak what we need, so trying to hide or disguise our wants as something other is a lack of faith and belief and respect for our Heavenly Father.

I don’t on the other hand there is such a thing as unanswered prayers. Our Heavenly Father knows us better than we know ourselves and He has already seen ahead what the results of our prayers are going to be. Sometimes just silence itself is an answer in itself, and it’s not because our Father doesn’t love us, but that He DOES love us so much, that He goes…wow…good thought, great prayer, but this will not be as beneficial in the long run as we think it will be for ourselves.

Instead of throwing our hands up in the air and feel frustration at our Heavenly Father, when it comes down to prayer, even a quick prayer that we didn’t lock the keys in the truck, have faith and trust and respect for our Heavenly Father.

He loves you so much that He isn’t going to give or not give you something, that HE already knows is or isn’t good for you.

God is watching out for you.

On that note, in the mood for a good laugh? Read some REALLY funny and real prayers that were overheard:

Acts 17:11: Humor: How NOT to pray

This one had me falling out of my chair laughing.:

“Lord, that lady who gestured rudely to me in my car today, I pray that you would slap her silly with your scorching judgment. Teach her not to treat your children that way, with a scathing rebuke from on high. Amen.”

Something to have you go….awwwwww…

This cute little guy isn’t my own dog per se, but I couldn’t resist sharing the video when I came across it.As you know, I have two dachshunds that I lovingly call “Double Trouble”.
I can’t help it. I think they tag team.I was just surfing through the net and I came across this video and it was just too cute.

Perpetual toddlers the “Double Trouble” are.

Seeking His Word

Okay….I shouldn’t be writing blogs late at night, but the kids are sleeping, the dogs are currently competing in synchronize sleeping and apparently winning and hubby is doing hubby things (translation: playing an online game), so I had some free time.

That and it gives me an excuse to snack on some oreos. I know. I know. Unfortunately we are out of m&m’s at the moment and rather than panic, I chose to substitute something “healthier”-the oreos.

I wish I could say that, the oreos, served the cxraving, but it didn’t because what I really wanted more than anything wasn’t a subsitute but m&m’s.

Have you ever just get a hunger like that? A craving for something and nothing seems to be able to fill that hunger, that need.

Oh, you can try substitutes, but it just never seems to be enough and no matter what, that hunger just won’t go away until you give in to it and feed it?

I’ve been like that recently.

I’ve just craved God’s word and not just in the casual reading. Yes, I’m reading through the Bible, but I needed and wanted more than just fill my daily quota of God’s word.

Just reading books about the bible was okay, but never can scratch the surface and as I find myself reading God’s word, I found myself struggling in some ways to really grasp the full picture of His word.

I wanted to know more about His word. The background, how to really study effectively God’s word and just what God’s desire was for me.

1Peter 2:2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,

Seeking dictionaries, commentaries, concordance, I realize that more than anything I needed to keep challenging myself and pushing myself to keep finding ways to stay on fire for and with God and with His word.

I felt so spiritually weak and immature and just not really measuring up in a way that I felt like I am truly fit to be a servant to God and I just felt like a broken vessel that could not serve our Father like I felt I should.

Ephesians 3:19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Unfortunately there were no local courses or classes that really were within a range or flexibility (translation: cheap) that I could seek to know God’s word and this is something that I could not find at church, however recently I was blessed to find by way of careful discernment a correspondence class that was graded, and provided a strong biblical foundation and way to studying the bible and praise God, it’s been fun.

Okay.

I’ve only taken one class so far, but like a fresh glass of milk that with the first taste, just goes down filling, I can’t wait to take the next lesson.

If you’ve read, my post “Shared BIble“, I shared with you, the dear bible that was given to me as a gift.

Bible
2Tmothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work

The best thing about it, in addition to that it is God’s word, was that it is the best bible, I have ever received because it wasn’t the one I wanted and God couldn’t have deliver it to me, any other better way.

Yes, that’s right.

I had my heart set on another one and God in His divine providence, had my husband give me another and I wouldn’t trade that bible for all the money in the world because of the reminder it is to me of our Heavenly Father and the love and reminder of who and what He is through the guidance and love of my husband.

The best mistake he ever made and I love him for it.

On the cover, are the words, “Faith”.

A reminder to me to have faith as hard as it may feel, but always necessary and a sign of trust to our Heavenly Father.

It is a reminder to have faith in my husband, in my family and in the blessings of our Heavenly Father.

It is a reminder that I’m not perfect.

I’m weak.

I’m immature and I can’t do it, but God can.

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ “

Taking this course is a blessing, because it challenges me to keep studying the bible in fresh new ways, and keeping that fire for our Heavenly Father going.

There are several other distance learning courses that are available and I”m still mulling over which one I will take next, but I DO know that right now…I’m enjoying learning how to study God’s word.

I don’t think it ever gets too old to learn how to read His word, to have it sink in and how to apply His word to our lives.

If you haven’t taken the time to read God’s word yourself, Gentle Friend, I encourage you to.

Modern Girl's Guide to Bible Study by Jen Hatmaker. Click on image to find out more about the book

There are so many great books that are out there to help you. One particular favorite of mine is “The Modern Girl’s Guide to Bible Study”.

Very fun. Down to earth and geared for busy mom (and women) like you and I, it’s one of many great books out there to help you get motivated, encouraged and on the track to studying and really getting into the meat and potatoes of God’s word.

So Gentle Friend, as I find ways to keep exploring and reading God’s word, what ways and methods can you seek for yourself and in your time with God?

Ezra 7:10. Neither Ezra nor Israel could know enough of God’s will without going to the scriptures.

Psalm 1:1,2; 19:7; 119:34 105. David, though inspired, loved and read the scriptures of the law.

1 Timothy 4:13; 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:14 17. Paul constantly points Timothy to the scriptures for his wisdom and power to teach the church. He says the scriptures are the word of God.

Thankful Thursday

Come join Iris’s “Thankful Thursdays” every Thursday to share your praises of what God has done for you in your life.

Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the lyre,
O God, my God.
—Psalm 43:4

Even in the darkest days, it seems difficult sometimes to lift ones head up and lift up ones arms in praise and glory to our Heavenly Father, but you have to admit….who needs coffee when after a time of coming together in fellowship, be it in person, or in heart, that singing songs of thankfullness and praise to Our Heavenly Father is the best energizer??

Heavenly Father, I thank You so much that even on days when I feel like I can’t make time for you and I feel like falling, You fill in where I am weak and unworthy and keep me moving forward.

Thank You Father for not giving up on this poor soul. There are moments in my life as there are moments in any life when we often feel like we just don’t have the time or the energy and God shows through even then, in His love and patience for us and rather than abandon us, He walks with us, He listens to us and then He intervenes and reminds us and chastises us where we needed to be chastise.
Lord, Thank You for my husband for he is my better half. He fills me in where I am prideful and remind me of what is right and he lifts me up where I am weaker and he is stronger at. Lord, I thank you for truly finding a man who not only led me to You, but when I am weak, reminds me of You and what You offer to us as a family and as a couple.

Lord, I thank You for the people in my life who humble me and remind me of where I am in need of spiritual growth. Though the lessons are hard the outcome is worth it and a testament and a glory not to what I can do, for what I can do without You, is nothing and empty but what I can do, with and for You is a testament to Your love and Your strength.

Father, I pray You guide me in my spiritual growth and my obvious spiritual immaturity and remove the blinders, the cushions and the obstructions that keep me from seeing You and Your word and keep filling me with a need and hunger to learn and read Your word and to understand what You want from me and for me and how I can serve You as Your humble servant and not as a servant to the world.

Lord, I thank You for being imperfect because I know I am nothing without You and I rejoice that I am not perfect for which I would be blinded by my own desires and goals and not seeing the truth by Your desires and goals for me, for us, for Your glory.

Guide me each day and each week and each month and year and Lord, keep reminding me that You are seeking me and will not just walk away from me as this imperfect soul, this imperfect body cries out to do and remind me that it’s not meant to be easy but that is the glory to Your name and perfection, Heavenly Father.

Word Filled Wednesday-Not the Roller Coaster!

I just couldn’t understand what was so thrilling about the ride. When something is measured in “stories” and goes faster than I normally would drive on any given day, terrifying seem more appropriate than thrilling, but my husband insisted that it would be “fun”, “exciting”, and “I wouldn’t regret it”.

As I heard those words, my brain began processing the meaning of the words. “Fun” became “Fear”.

“Exciting” meant “Screaming”.

“I wouldn’t regret it” meant “I wouldn’t regret sticking my nails five inches into his skin, all the while screaming for rescue while trying to process quickly at the same time how they were going to pry my hands off my husband and not in a good way”.

In my lifetime, going on a roller coaster never really brought up visions of laughter and fun, but usually images of my eyes clamped shut so tight that I appear to be an eyeless woman and my mouth frozen in a not so silent look of terror.

If you were with me, you would find out quickly that I would put Munich’s “The Scream” to share and there was nothing so silent about my screams. People’s heads at the amusement park, including those on the rides would all turn trying to figure out the source of my scream.

I’m getting better.

My husband’s arms no longer bear scars of our recent attempt to ride a ride together, mostly because he got smart and either put a child between us or talk some gullible stranger to take the fall for him.

And I’m still trying to conquer my fear.

I find and instant,”I had to many ice creams, hot dogs and cotton candy’s” routine tend to work even though I think my husband is getting wise to that.

I guess it doesn’t help that I start using the excuse the minute our vehicle pulls up to the entrance way and I should start waiting till we’re ACTUALLY at the rides and I’ve actually had some of the mention food, to use that excuse.

How often though, do we tend to be like that ourselves in day to day lives.

Unless you are a billionaire to have your own roller coaster in your backyard, aren’t our lives sometimes like a roller coaster?

My nemesis. The Roller Coaster.

My nemesis. The Roller Coaster.

We have our ups and our downs, and we have our lowpoints when we feel like our stomach has jumped off the rides without us and we have our high points where we want to jump off ourselves rather than face that incoming drop that we see when we peek open one eye (not highly recommended by the way if you get lied... pesternaggedbullied...sweet-talked ) while on such “fun” rides that have the following names on it such as : “Death” anywhere in it’s name or “Heart Attack” anywhere in its name or”Lose your stomach” or “Everything in your body comes outsides your body (that’s a fun ride)”-or my personal favorite-”Your spouse lied-even Godzilla got scared and sick on this and refuse to come near this again” ride.

That’s when God steps in.

Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”-Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT)

That’s actually a comforting feeling knowing that He’s already been on that ride and He’s not going to let us go down that road if He doesn’t already know that we can and will overcome it since He’s paved the way.

So the bill is three weeks late. So the doctor may not have given you a great diagnosis. Your child comes home with enough metal to set off a metal detector without even having to come near one. Your spouse isn’t save. Your dog…okay, I’m not going into dogs because I’m still housebreaking the newest puppy, and Lord, I love You and I know this dog is Your creation but really…the carpet.

How does a carpet feel like grass?

Lord, God bless You if there is a dog heaven, because I love my dogs, I adore them and they are my fur-babies, and they will love it there to do whatever they want, but in the meantime, if there is a doggie military school that exisits…I think my youngest will turn it into an insane asylum within two hours. Somehow, my puppy has gotten the idea that grass is good to play and carpet is…well….you get the picture.

Life is filled with roller coasters….Mini-ones that are just small thrill rides like discovering a secret place that you didn’t think can exist for a puppy to use (not going there in this post or any post…sweet denial is my refuge right now), to the kids discovering the joy of markers and the wall.

Then there are the major roller coasters.

We all have them in our lives.

Our spouses, our families, both close and extended. Work. School. Just life in general, but we have a loving God who IS just and part of helping us in our Christian walk, let us know, we’re not going to be in this alone.

Cry? He has been there and cried.

Pain? He has felt pain, both big and small and wants to comfort you and encourage you in your time of distress.

Betrayed? Wow. He knows the stab of betrayal and says, “I have overcome”, take my hand.

Lost? He’s been there. Has the road all mapped out so it’s not as lost for us.

“Fill in the blank your feeling” and HE has felt it, He has overcome it and HE is NOT going to let you go through this alone. You matter THAT much to Him.

He is with the lost, the broken, the sick and the healthy and the found and the healed.

He is always going to be there, will be there and He is not going to let you, me, anyone go, because He loves us that much and He hurts that much for us to come to Him.

There is NO one He is not wanting to be with. He is the door that is always open, a cup of hot chocolate and cookies waiting and a warm place by the fireplace, ready for you, for me, for anyone who chooses to walk through His door and accept His free, unconditional, no strings attached offer.

Roller Coasters? No problem. He’s the safety inspector whose already written the ride and goes, “I’ve already gone ahead and ridden it and conquer it so come with Me now”.

So what does little ol’ fraidy cat like me do?

“Okay Lord. I’m taking a deep breath and going to try again”.

Of course, I have to get my blood pressure to go down, re-color my hair from the instant white it’s turn and find someone to help loosen my grip on some poor soul’s arm that was in the way when I was clutching at anything in fear.

So I seek Him. I pray to Him, I go to His word,( which reminds me…if you are terrify of roller coasters like I am, no where in the bible does it condemn roller coasters so I’m out of luck there), and I keep pushing forward.

If David can face Goliath than I can face my Goliaths with faith that our Heavenly Father is there with me and for me (and probably with cotton balls in His ear to ease the sound of my screaming in fear) and I may one day conquer my fear of roller coasters. I may not, but no matter what, God is there.

He wants us to push forward. He knows we can’t hide forever and why should we even tried to hide?

If we have faith in Him, how is having more faith in our fear versus having faith in a Heavenly Father who is stronger and beyond all things even roller coasters showing trust in our Lord?

So I keep pushing forward.

I find ways to confront my fear of roller coasters, but more than anything, I find ways to keep having the faith and the trust in our Heavenly Father to deal with the roller coasters that is present in all our lives, knowing that our Lord is there, He has already gone ahead of us, and waiting for us at the ride’s exit with a smile….even if we are staggering and being half dragged by our spouse because our legs gave out before the ride started.

Do you have roller coasters in your life?

What ways can God help you conquer your fear of “Fill in the blank of what you are afraid” of and how does His word and promises give you hope that it’s just fear?

By searching His word, what promises can you find that the roller coaster is just that…a roller coaster and nothing to be afraid of?

Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your words of comfort and trust. I pray that You remind me always that You have already overcome and all I am really seeing isn’t truth or reality but the blanket of fear. Help me Lord find ways to keep removing that blanket from my eyes, so I can see You and see what You have already overcome. Help me Lord see You for what is really there: You standing there at the end to greet us with words of encouragement and comfort and a promise that when the ride is over, we won’t be left standing alone, because You, Lord, is and will always be there with us.

Tuesday Tip Jar-White Vinegar

I came across this tip while trying to find not only an effective (and sanity saving way) to combat pets soiling in the home but to help encourage (and discourage) my young puppy from going in the house while housebreaking him at the same time.

White Vinegar. Water. Spray bottle.

Natural.Simple.Cheap.Works.

I have to add that it helps to use this along with anything that breaks down enzymes as well but as a stand alone product, white vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle works really well in diffusing areas that the puppy has decided to go at.

The white vinegar basically neutralizes traces of ammonia that tends to linger behind and removes any scent from the spot so the puppy can not come back to the area.

Used with baking soda…it’s effective with housebreaking, because as long the puppy can no longer pick up “cues” in the home, he is more likely to go outside, but if he can still smell where he has gone before…it’s a never ending cycle.

This helps to if the puppy is older as well because as young puppies, they still don’t have good bladder control (sounds familiar to potty training I know, and white vinegar helps there too for those occasional on the floor accidents).

In our case, he is 4 months old and still prone to accidents particularly when playing with his older brother (oh that is just so much fun there), however for on the spot treatment short of tearing one’s hair out…this works great.

A plus to this as well is that white vinegar can be used to clean shower doors (thank you so much to Amydeanne of “The 160 acre woods” for alerting me to that fact) and keeps puppy from licking the shower door (don’t ask, I won’t tell).

Thinning the Faith

I remember a time that I had meatloaf, but because I didn’t have the right ingredients, I tried to substitute the ingredients instead and as well as the meatloaf tasted, it could have tasted better, had I not only used the right ingredients that was called for but also followed the directions exactly instead of trying to do it on my own.In a way, following the Christian faith is the same way.

We run into a danger of living a false belief, when trying to adapt God to what we think He is and what we think it should be when in reality, we are mixing in the ingredients for a distorted view of Christianity.

“Jesus did not simply accept the outcasts, He changed them. Yes, He touched the leper, but that touch healed him. Yes, He ate with the prostitutes and tax-collectors (who were notoriously dishonest), but He didn’t encourage them to be better prostitutes and more proficient tax-collectors, He transformed their lives and brought them to repentance.

The inclusion Jesus practiced and that we must practice today is a transformational inclusion. Otherwise, we are hurting people more than we are healing them, and that is certainly not the path of justice.” Source: Americans for Truth

Romans 1:18-19 (King James Version)
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

As much as we want to believe that God is a God of Love, if we are honest about the scriptures and do a thorough study of the bible, we find that He is also a God of judgment and He doesn’t grade on a curve. God does not like sin.

He doesn’t say….if you skate by, I don’t care…

As we read His word, we see that , if He does not like it, He has no room for it and will not stand for it. He loves the sinner yes. He doesn’t love, however the sin or the continue committing of the sin.

Sin is considered fundamentally an offense against Him and He does and will punish sin.

There is no, all will be saved so just keep on sinning. There is redemption from the sin, stop committing the sin and grow in His grace. There will be those who has accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior and those who made the free will choice of didn’t.

Saying He isn’t…doesn’t change what is in the Bible and leaves a person in one of two positions.

Either you believe in the Bible or you don’t.

If you don’t believe in the Bible, you’re not a Christian. There is no other way t o it, because being a Christian means being a follower of Christ and His Word and belief in Him and His word, not just bits and parts of His word that makes us feel good and not convicted.

If we feel convicted…maybe because deep down, we know its not right in the eyes of God.

Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” – Luke 6:46-49.

It’s in scripture and if someone is going to profess they are a bible believing, Christian who believes Jesus Christ is their Lord and Saviour part of that is the reality that God does not excuse sin. Even though we are saved, it doesn’t give us a ticket to do whatever we want on earth and then we go to heaven….We are expected, on earth to emulate Christ, NOT to be perfect because the ONLY one who is perfect, is Jesus Christ Himself.
God knows we are human.
We are imperfect.
We are flawed and we will make mistakes but if we knowingly and continue to choose to make those mistakes or to knowing sin knowing it’s wrong, God is not at fault.
We are.

It’s difficult to say we don’t know what God thinks when it’s written in the Good Book for us.

Don’t believe it? Pick up the bible and check it out:

Psalm 78:19-21 19.-Then they spoke against God; They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? “Behold, He struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide meat for His people?” Therefore the LORD heard and was full of wrath, And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also mounted against Israel;

John 3:36-”He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Psalm 5:5-The arrogant shall not stand in thy sight: Thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

Isaiah 13:11-Thus I will punish the world for its evil, And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud, And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless.

There are many occurences where God shows that He is equally a God of redemption and a God of judgement. He is the tough parent who loves but doesn’t let us go unpunished for pushing the boundries.

As Christnotes.org puts it,”In an effort to make the Gospel more seeker-friendly, some Christians avoid talking about God’s wrath, anger, and hatred toward those who have sinned against him. By watering down the wrath of God such people cheapen and diminish the love of God.”

In effect….it cheapens Christ sacrifice on the cross.

Let’s take a look at Romans 1:18-31 (ASV):

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, that their bodies might be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; [they are] gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,. without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;

H. Richard Niebuhr, professor at Yale Divinity School, described this as,”"A God without wrath brought men without sin into a kingdom without judgment through a Christ without a cross.”And in effect…by saying that there is no God of wrath….that man never sin, then what is the point of the cross, but if we are to believe that Christ lived and then died on the cross for us, part of that is because we have to accept the fact that He paid for our sins, due to a a God that is wrathful.”

Romans 5:6-8 (NAS) For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

It never ceases to amaze me that people keep talking about Jesus

William Sloane Coffin….most of us want peace at any price as long as the peace is ours and somebody else pays the price.

as if He was here for just peace although Jesus, himself said, “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (Matthew 10:34 NIV)
Christ came to offer us hope, freedom from sin, but our world isn’t on this world, but in God’s world.
We must not mistake the world, the society that we live in, as the kingdom that God hopes to build.
The kingdom He is building will be built by His hands not by ours. Until Christ returns, there isn’t peace and won’t be peace and it’s only by Him and through Him will we one day have peace. Until then, we still live in a world that is broken by sin, sin that we by free will caused, but through the blood of Jesus Christ, He paid the price so we are freed and have hope.
If we use Matthew Henry’s Commentary to look at this verse, it goes simply:

The apostle begins to show that all mankind need the salvation of the gospel, because none could obtain the favor of God, or escape his wrath by their own works. For no man can plead that he has fulfilled all his obligations to God and to his neighbor; nor can any truly say that he has fully acted up to the light afforded him.

The sinfulness of man is described as ungodliness against the laws of the first table, and unrighteousness against those of the second. The cause of that sinfulness is holding the truth in unrighteousness. All, more or less, do what they know to be wrong, and omit what they know to be right, so that the plea of ignorance cannot be allowed from any. Our Creator’s invisible power and Godhead are so clearly shown in the works he has made, that even idolaters and wicked Gentiles are left without excuse. They foolishly followed idolatry; and rational creatures changed the worship of the glorious Creator, for that of brutes, reptiles, and senseless images.

They wandered from God, till all traces of true religion must have been lost, had not the revelation of the gospel prevented it.

MHCThe nature of man, whether pagan or Christian, is still the same; and the charges of the apostle apply more or less to the state and character of men at all times, till they are brought to full submission to the faith of Christ, and renewed by Divine power. There never yet was a man, who had not reason to lament his strong corruptions, and his secret dislike to the will of God.

For whatever may be pretended,as to the sufficiency of man’s reason to discover Divine truth and moral obligation, or to govern the practice aright, facts cannot be denied.

And these plainly show that men have dishonored God by the most absurd idolatries and superstitions; and have degraded themselves by the vilest affections and most abominable deeds.

This is coming from the NEW TESTAMENT, so it’s not easy to say, it’s not for us…Because the truth is that God’s word is still relevant today as it was yesterday.

Even Pastor Steven W. Cornell argued that,

Yet when Christians oppose practices the bible clearly condemns , it is amazing to notice how quickly some people appeal to Jesus’ words, “Judge not, lest you be judged.”

Another more subtle way people misuse this saying is to excuse personal responsibility for making judgments. “Who am I to judge?” they ask, “After all, Jesus did say, ‘Judge not.’”

Jesus’ intention is not to excuse us from all moral judgments, or to promote an individualistic attitude. Our modern society constantly conditions us to resist strong convictions about right and wrong. Jesus, however held to such convictions and taught them with authority.

We are responsible for the free will, for the personal choices that we make.

It’s not a conditional, we can blame others and deflect the blame for the personal choices that no one else, but ourselves make about ourselves and our lives. What we choose to do, often tends to be more in our control than we sometimes want to admit.

Who makes us lie?

Who makes us feel right to gossip?

Who makes us choose to handle a situation in bad graces versus with a sense of dignity and love as characterized by Jesus Christ?

It’s almost like expecting to live life with one foot in God’s world and one foot in the world and when things go wrong, we expect to be enable rather than say, “Hey I made a bad choice” and take responsibilty for bad moral judgements or actions.

It is all too easy,” writes the late N.T. scholar F.F. Bruce, “to believe in a Jesus who is largely a construction of our own imagination-an inoffensive person whom no one would really trouble to crucify. But the Jesus we meet in the Gospels, far from being an inoffensive person, gave offense right and left. Even his loyal followers found him, at times, thoroughly disconcerting. Jesus did not go about mouthing pious platitudes; had he done so, he would not have made as many enemies as he did.

Jesus offer to us the truth, but to accept the truth was and is to also accept the harsh fact that we live in an ugly, broken sin filled world where there are people unsaved, who don’t know Christ, or who know Him but choose of their own free will to reject Him.
We live in an imperfect world where it’s not about us and not even about God, but about the “I”. With God there is no “I”, there is and always will be, only “Him”.
There are three actual conditions that are shared that can be used to determine the situation:
  1. When behavior is clearly commanded by God and that includes going to the ONE source, The Bible. Not to a website about the bible, or a pastor, but THE STRAIGHT SOURCE: The Bible. If a person doesn’t believe that the bible is the infallible word of God, in all honesty, what argument is there? On whose moral basis other than scripture are they going to base this on?
  2. God clearly defines without question what is forbidden without an “if”, “and” or “but.
  3. There are some matters that God leaves open to personal responsibility and judgment.

Though the pastor does point out, “However, to agree with God’s clearly stated standards does not constitute unlawful judging–unless, of course, it involves hypocrisy. “

The Christian walk is rewarding but it can also be a walk of balance. It’s so vital that we keep seeking our Father and finding that balance in our walk. It’s not a free for all, or a “get out of ticket” card.

It’s helpful and encouraging to keep in walk with other Christians that we know without a doubt, are spiritual mature and for ourselves, to find that time to seek God in His word and to read God’s word each day if possible, and in every situation instead of trying to make it up as we go.

God is the tough love parent. He loves us and wants to guide us and direct us but also knows to that for us to love Him without conditions, He also has to allow us to make those choices on our own. I wonder how it must pain Him, when we only seek Him when we are in trouble or when it’s ONLY convenient for us rather than all the time.

Gentle Friend,

Do you place conditions in your relationship with God? Do you take the time to really seek His word and see what He wants to offer?

What can you do for yourself to take that steps to not thin your walk with God but to walk an authentic walk with our Heavenly Father?

Heavenly Father, I pray that I seek an authentic walk with You Lord that isn’t so thinned, so watered down so cushioned that rather than following You faithfully, I live a faith of blindness and cushions. Remove the blinders Lord, Remove the cushions and I pray You hear this servant’s call to live a simple and authentic faith with You that includes both the loving and the harsh truth of Your words.

In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Once you were wandering like lost sheep. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls. (1 Peter 2:25)

I was just impressed as I read this scripture.

What image did it bring to you?

For me, it just reminded me of days when I found myself just hungry for God’s word and for encouragement from Him as I seek Him and seek His word.

There were many days when I felt like I was grasping for words to write, for inspiration and more than anything for hope sometimes.

How like are we, to sheep?

There are days when we are guided by our Great Shepard but when for whatever reason we stray from Him, we feel lost, scared or worried?

I was reading Greg Laurie’s devotional and he was discussing how we are like that ourselves and how more true when we take the time to look at how we sometimes conduct our lives compared with others.

Rather than try to live by God’s standards, how many times have we found ourselves slipping instead and following a different path that doesn’t necessarily lead to God but to something or someone else?’

Think about the influence both good and bad that celebrities have on ourselves and worse of all, on our children. How often are we quick to write off what someone has to say, not based on God’s biblical truth but on how “popular’ a person is?

In 1 John 4:1, we are implored:”Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

Looking at today’s pop culture, the prevalence of books that claimed to “solve our problems and deliver the message” and asked oneself, using God’s word, how to shield ourselves from a world that looks to every other source but God’s word itself for the answers.

As sheep, how easily misled are we or have we become?

I love this suggestion from,Critical Issues Commentary,”The Discerning of the Spirit“, where we are challenged:

The next time you receive teaching that purports to be Christian, whether it is from a “seeker” church or a “laughing revival” or anything in between, listen to what is proclaimed from the pulpit. If you never hear a clear message about the person and work of Christ and the claims of the gospel, the message being preached is not from the Spirit of God. You must discern spirits. If you passively accept what purports to be God’s message when it is not, you are setting yourself up for deception. Treating deception as if it were the gospel of Jesus Christ is sin.

With this in mind…It’s vital to remind that yes, we are God’s sheep but it’s easy to stray from His care and watch. Praise God that we have a loving Shepard who seeks us and wants to draw us back in the safety of His fold.

Reflecting on your role as “God’s sheep”, how important is it that we take the time to be careful we don’t fall into the trap and deception of feeling good for the sake of feeling good versus following God’s word by faith and trust in Him.

How vital or not vital to constantly test all spirits against God’s word and to make sure that the Word of God is in there?

Heavenly Father, I thank you for Your word and Your Lord and pray that I keep my eyes on You Lord. Lord, lead me to Your Word and Your teaching and give me open and alert eyes and a discerning spirit to separate Your truth from the lies and deceptions of this world.
