Whenever I read this scripture, I keep getting the image of a chemistry set laid out in front of a person and they are slowly testing whatever it is before them to see if it’s good for them or harmful.
The great thing about God’s word is that not only is it portable, but we don’t have to worry about spills or dangerous explosions (unless you want to count debates and arguments about God’s word as dangerous explosions).
He gave us His word in written form so that we can have Him deep in our hearts and in front of Him when we are tested each day of our lives.
However, like a chemistry set, for our bibles to be useful to us, we can’t leave them in the closet, gathering dust, but need to dust them off, open them and learn how to find out what comes our way is that of God or another.
I find that as I spend time in God’s word and not just in verses, but actually taking the time to read Him , how much easier it is to deal with events in my life, with His guidance and inspiration.
His word as a measuring stick in all we do.
Even when we are at church and the verse is flashed on the screen, we still open our own bibles to understand where our pastor is coming from and what God’s message is coming through the sermon….after all, we are all still human, and still prone to error.
My husband kidded me because there is a popular cosmetic that I keep hinting and emailing, I mean, hinting to him that I would like for Christmas because it’s skin friendly and won’t break me out in pimples.
The only way I knew it was worth getting was because of the time and research I took on my own to see if it was worth the cost (we’re on a strict budget right now so I’m just happy to get ice cream here and there), to ask for a Christmas gift. I read the ingredients, researched the site, cross compared with other brands.
The same goes with God’s word.
It is there to help us discern what we read, listen, think and do;We have to still be careful when we listen to others who speak about His word, for there are still wolves who masquarade as sheep.
God implores us that we take care we don’t quickly believe in everything, but keep testing it and testing it and keep, testing to see if it lines up with His word or does it go against it.
I can’t think of the last time I was in front of a chemistry setup of any type, but I do remember the teacher just emphasizing the importance of being careful as we handle the experiments before us.
Take our time and read the instructions, look at what we are handling and really take the time to see if it will be hazardous to us and if it was, take the needed precautions before proceeding. Isn’t that the same way with life as well? The price may look good, the ads may sound good, but the end result may not necessarily be that good for us.
So we must read the instructions (our bibles), analyze the situation (prayer), and take the precautions that we need to take (putting on the armor of God), before we proceed.
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits.” (Matthew 7:15-16)

Wonderful analogy. I love the way you tied it all together. It is *so* imperative that we read the Word so we can recognize anything contradictory to it. Great post! Wonderful fit for WFW.

Very clever Twinkle Mom photo and verse combination. We do need to test and check and keep the Word close by always…
